Japan Airlines 777 At PHX?!

Thu Mar 22, 2012 8:43 pm

This isn't the weirdest thing I've seen come through PHX recently, (see previous DL 744 thread)

But I was sitting outside by ASU and I saw a JL old livery T7 take off to the East and do an immediate U-turn....what's going on?

Flight # indicates it's a charter flight. On behalf of whom is beyond me. Maybe some sports team?

If you look at Seattle's schedule, they play in Japan starting on the 24th of March with the season openers on the 28th and 29th of March. So, this has got to be one of the team's charters, either Oakland's or Seattle's or they all took one airplane together to keep costs down.

I was at the airport when it ferried in from LAX this morning. Its on it's way back to NRT now. I couldn't be there for the departure however. It was JA736J B777-300ER.

JAL usually brings in a couple charters for Japanese baseball teams during spring training to play the MLB teams. It is a big event on the T4 Parking Garage roof every year with spotters and fans alike. I was there a few years ago when they brought in 2 744's simultaneously.

Actually US has expressed its intent to serve PHX-NRT when it takes delivery of the A350. I think it's a stupid idea and that they would be better off serving FRA. ANA could probably pull the route off with a 787, but I'm not sure why they'd bother.

I agree about Asia -- I was just saying what US "plans" to do, just like they planned on getting A340s and planned to start flights to PEK from PHL. I think it's completely idiotic that they haven't added a single long haul route from PHX since the merger. I'm not trying to say PHX could be any kind of major int'l hub (as you say, proximity to LAX and even LAS doesn't help), but I think it could eventually support a half-dozen long haul routes, in particular FRA. I guess they can't figure out their contracts to make that happen though. Honestly, I think PHX is more likely to see LH return than an Asian carrier start service despite the 787 coming on-line. Emirates expressed interest a few years ago, but that would be stupid and I don't think they'll ever bother with it. I'm not even sure if KL/AF could make PHX work. It really is a strange city in that it has a population of over 5 million and one of the busiest airports in the world, yet can't support much int'l service...which is why people here get excited to see a 77W or really anything that isn't American, Canadian, Mexican, or British.

I've heard that once more of the A330s are delivered to US that they'll start the route. I know from somewhere that they actually do have the slot, it's just unused. (If someone can find a source, that'd be great!)
ANA could do a number of Star Alliance connections here at PHX with US...IMO that would be well enough reason to start a 787 route. IMO it'd be a perfect fit.

Yeah they ran FRA-PHX for a few years with 343s and occasional 742s (I don't think 744s). Check the photo database. The pulled out around 2003 or 2004.

As for ANA, it's a thought, but it's highly doubtful. So much Asian traffic goes via LAX and SFO, even LAS to an extent; PHX doesn't really fit in with that. DEN will get ANA 787 service. I just can't see PHX supporting an Asian route, even with the *A connections.

Based on pics in the database, it looks like they ran A340's...I'm seeing some -200's, but mostly -300's. Again, based on the pics, it looks like they ran to PHX between March 2001 and January '04.

As others have mentioned, LH flew here between 2001 and 2004. If you're ever at B23, look closely... There are still 'A340' markings on the ground. There are still some markings at the WestJet ticket counter, as well, that give away that it was previously home to LH.

US is not holding a slot at NRT. At NRT, you need to use it or it goes back to the airport. Now, US could be holding an old route authority, but that is pretty much useless as the new bilateral puts no restrictions on the number of carriers or routes. The limiting factor is the number of slots available for U.S. carriers

I miss the HP 747's they used to HNL & NGO, I still have a full paged ad from a travel agent magazine announcing HP's new flight to Japan, too bad it failed so badly, I think HP wanted connecting traffic from PHX to NGO, but each time I took HP to HNL on the 747's the flights were all but full, yet HNL-NGO was empty, they really needed to market the flight more heavily in Japan and Hawaii.

I remember reading about one of their PHX-HNL-NGO flights going out with only two passengers on board, Two on a B747! It's no wonder it failed. HP's foray into 747 flights very nearly killed the airline all together. The 747 looked good in the old paint scheme though.

IMO HP should've used a smaller aircraft (but I don't think the 330 was around at that time?) for this flight, as well as possibly having some sort of easier connection to places where there were many Japanese (increased flights to Cali, etc). They tried doing something too big for their own good, really.

The flights between LAS & PHX were just positioning for the Hawaii flights, they ran at less than optimal times, late or early so I think the weak loads on those tags were to be expected. They were beasts, the galleys had the KLM logo on the ovens still.

I never was on a cancelled flight, but took 2-3 hour delays twice, the plane landed about midnight in LAS, with their midnight bank of flights I'd be back in PDX just before 4am, if the plane was 2-3 hours late, you'd arrive 3am into LAS and wait until late morning to early afternoon to catch a one-stop (RNO) flight that arrived in PDX at 3pm.

I remember reading about one of their PHX-HNL-NGO flights going out with only two passengers on board,

The mainland Hawaii flights were almost always full the 4 times I took HP, I flew PDX-PHX-HNL-LAS-PDX all 4 times., In comparison the HNL-NGO flights were empty constantly. The Japan award that HP got was the step that took them to the brink, That short lived service was the reasoning of buying the 747's, once HP pulled NGO, they used the 747's to JFK & HNL, until HP could dump them. Hawaii continued on 757's IIRC when the 747's left.
Next Flights: PDX-HNL-OGG-LIH-PDX On AS, WP & HA
