United And LHR, Will It Ever Come Together?

Mon Mar 26, 2012 4:20 am

I have my 4th United flight from the US to LHR tomorrow. What is the status of moving old CO and UA gates together? And if they do, will they keep the nice black check-in counter for First Class and Global Services? And it seems as if UA all together at Heathrow deserves the United International Club and United club and not lean on a blended Star Alliance lounge (which is new and nice looking but falls way short of the competition)

In fact, how many United flights are there into LHR from the USA?
The world is missing love, let's use our flights to spread it!

Its dragging isn't it. I wish CO(UA) could have moved to T1 by now but I guess its just a question of gate space and as such I don't think we will see consolidation until T2 is finished but someone please correct me if I am wrong.

There must be something in the region of 15 flights a day out of LHR to the states to EWR. ORD, IAD, ORD, IAH, SFO and LAX

Does CO need any star alliance feed at LHR? or is LHR the final destination/original origin for most CO pax?

According to the LHR slot coordinator, Aiurport Coordination Ltd at

http://www.acl-uk.org/reportsStatistics.aspx?id=98&subjectId=33

UA have 238 weekly arrival and departure slots at LHR, eqivalent to 119 weekly or 17 daily rotations in and out of LHR Check out page 2 of the latest report (Summer 2012) at the above link.

Star Alliance website shows 210 weekly movements, so 105 departures a week, or 15 a day.

I doubt there'll be any changes to existing lounges until the new T2 opens. I suspect there will be common use lounges there too, but that's just a guess.

He was saying SLOTs so UA does have room for 2 more daily flights is what I'm gathering from putting both of your info together.

There were 5,782 scheduled UCH departures from LHR in 2011, 15.84 AVG/Day.

Depending on the day of week, UA does either 14, 15, or 16 daily departures from LHR.

On the average are more UA flights having to use bus gates versus jetway @ LHR? PM CO flights in T4 same?

Never mind additional slots, UA could just increase capacity, expecially to EWR by getting three class 763/777 on the route ( I appreciate that you need the metal to do this but with the 787 coming soon my fingers are crossed) . IAH I am sure could do with three class as well IMHO.

It's rare for United to bus however there is little prospect of getting the T4 operation into T1, however T2 opens in 2013 and all United ops will be under one roof there. It's not a major hassle and T4 is in better shape than T1.

Did Skyteam recently renovate T4 for its member airlines , or am I thinking of another terminal at LHR?

Correct. T4 for Skyteam and T1 for Star Alliance. With of course some other non-alliance carriers joining them too.

What will T2 be when it opens? I think I read somewhere that it'll be mainly *A, but has this changed?

T1 - tbc - possibly demolished
T2 - STAR ALLIANCE
T3 - Oneworld / BA
T4 - Skyteam and non aligned
T5 - BA and IB

Connecting between T1 and T4 is very easy due to dedicated shuttle buses. I usually fly into T4 from IAH and then take the bus to T1. I have done it in reverse as well. UA/CO connect with BD and LH at LHR on code-shares.

Are you sure?

Can't see VS being happy to loose it's club house (and all their products; drive through check in, fast track security etc...) in T3 because they have to move to T4.

Plus VS terminal within a terminal at T3 as the VS Spin machine describes it.

One of those 763's are spoken for. There is another thread about UA upgrading IAD-CDG to a 763.

I have given you the general principle, but of course there are objections. Virgin are staying in T3 as you say because of the sustained and continuing investment they have put in. They do have their own dedicated and modern check in facility but continue to use the worst gates where arrivals and departures are seperated on the same level in Pier 7.

Quite a few Star Alliance carriers are still at T3 including AC, CA, NH, MS, ET, SK, SQ, TG, TK.

I am quite happy that UA's flights to EWR/IAH are flying out of T4 because then I can use the Skyteam Lounge which is tons of times better than the lousy Star Alliance Lounge at T1 !
