Nigeria Threatens BA And VS Again!

Mon Mar 26, 2012 5:38 pm

Nigeria threatens to ban BA and VS if they do not lower their air fares between London and Nigeria to the levels charged on flights to neighboring Ghana...

Nigeria is at it again... Let's see who wins this time.

Nigerian government must be bored again, trying to promote their precious Arik. Big surprise. BA/VS will refuse to pay up, Nigeria will give up, and we'll do it all again in a few months.

Round and round it goes.

Whilst I admire the balls of the Nigerian Aviation Minister, I am afraid vested interests will stop her dead in her tracks.

What bothers me is that Arik charges similar if not more than both VS and BA. I don't understand the whole scenario.

Why are fares more expensive? I mean there is the law of Supply and Demand obviously but still. If the Nigerian government wants fares to go down I guess it needs to increase the number of flights permitted between the two countries surely!

Well, this thread came just in time for me. I was just going to book my flight on AA from DFW-LHR, then on BA from LHR-LOS, tonight, then back after I take care of personal business there.

You see I got this e-mail the other day from a guy who works in the National Nigerian Bank that my father had an affair in Lagos many years ago, that produced a child, my half brother. He became a very successful businessman in the oil industry there and also owns a construction compnay. He was unfortunately killed 2 years ago in a tragic car accident that also claimed the lives of his wife and children. It appears I an his only living heir. He left more than $900 MILLION USD in their bank and they want me to claim it.

So I must delay my trip to LOS now pending the outcome of the BA/VS situation in Nigeria.

What is somewhat surprising about this is that the Nigerian Government isn't made up of idiots. The finance minister is a highly respected economist and has been tipped for nomination for President of the World Bank. Even if the aviation minister is friends with the cousin of the wife of the CEO of Arik, I'm sure that the Finance Minister would want to tell them to shut up since it is obviously far from in Nigeria's economic interests to have this constant uncertainty about flights.

Well I think Nigeria 'should' ban VS and BA.

Not because I think BA or VS are doing anything wrong but because at least that would be an end to it.

This is just going to roll on and on until LHR gets a 3rd runway and god knows how long THAT'S going to take.

This has nothing to do with the 3rd runway?

Well it does because only then will Arik be able to get slots for anything like what they are prepared to pay for them.

Even then they won't be cheap.

I think most are not aware of the 'stated issue' which is that for premium seats, there is a huge disparity between flights to Nigeria and flights to similarly distant West African countries.

The thought being, if economy seats don't have such a price disparity between say a flight from LHR - LOS & LHR - ACC, why such a disparity btw the same two flights, with regards to premium seats? What justifies the price disparity? Apparently the arguement by BA & VS that "they charge what the market will pay" is not an acceptable response as Nigerian govt feels passengers are being gouged.

The president has endorsed action against erring airlines: http://odili.net/news/source/2012/mar/28/346.html

Let's see how this all plays out.

So according to this article the focus is not on economy but on First and Business class seats.

Sounds like they are complaining about their own ticket prices as the general public only cares about Y.

In a way this is a slap to Arik as they are basically complainig about foreign ticket prices being to high. Seems Arik is in lower demadn than BA or VS.

They do know in a market economy that if an airline charge more and carry the same amount they should do it.

Don't they????

I know for a fact many of the officials have been to colleges in the US and UK.

Were they asleep in Econ 101???

I would argue there is no true market economy (in the true sense of the definition) practiced anywhere in the world. Atleast not to the extent of a free market. Just some freer than others.
