Video Of Bad Turbulence On B6 Flight

That's probably the worst I've seen from a video that's been posted online, but I'm still waiting for one that shows stuff flying around through the cabin. Anyone have any experiences with really bad turbulence that they'd like to share?

This seems quite bumpy, and the pilot did a good job warning everyone, but the doesn't even come close to some of the heavier stuff I have been through. I think its funny...the customer that just kept on working on her laptop through the entire thing...gotta meet that deadline LOL!!!

Honestly it doesn't seem all that bad. I wasn't sure how much was turbulence and how much was shaky camera. I would have expected more screams of terror.

Yeah it's a bit hard to tell how much of it is just a shaky camera, and how much of it is related to turbulence. It looks about like what I experienced flying PHX-SLC last April. That lasted for just a few seconds, and then not a single bump for the rest of the flight. I've had other flights that were fairly bumpy from the top of descent all the way to touchdown. I do disagree with the video's description of extreme turbulence. At worst it's severe, but more likely moderate-severe.

Didnt seem that bad.

Worst turbulence I have encounters is flying a Cessna 172 at 500ft AGL hitting a down draft loosing about 30ft in a split second. Lets just say we headed straight for the coastline to get over water ASAP It was a rough over land.

Looks fairly rough, but I've been in turbulence where that laptop would have gone flying and bins were popping open. People were definitlely screaming and crying. Lasted for about 10 min.

Haven't seen the drop in altitude nor the rolling of aircraft after the drop.
Thanks to the OP for labeling it as bad, and not scary

Still, the worst one I had was on AC E190 climbing out of Tampa in August weather. kudos to AC pilots

Not so bad. Moderate at worst. Clearly the guy taking the video is a nervous passenger, despite his claim of 200k miles. His expletives describing a few bumps say it all.

Looks like it could've been worse, but there were definitely a few good jolts in there. Just a week ago I was flying PHX-TUS on a US CR9 and it was pretty bad. The weather across southern Arizona that day was really crappy and due to the short duration of the flight we were forced to fly through it instead of climbing to a higher altitude.

Seemed worse than normal but nothing to write home about. The camera shaking really makes it hard to really tell, there was a lot of noise back there from the galley I asume?
Surprisingly I have not had that many rough flights, even with many Miami summer afternoon flights.
On ZRH-MIA right after takeoff from ZRH we hit some bad bumps, pilot came right on the PA and quickly and urgently told the FA's to sit down, bumps only lasted a few mins. Only other time I can think of was on a Chalks flight on a summer afternoon coming into Watson Island. Small plane, hot weather with storm clouds near by, we moved around a bit enough to make some passengers sick but again did not remember it being too bad.
If there are no screams its smooth  Of course that's a bit of an exaggeration but with "bad" turbulence I always expects a few "whooas, and hey there's" etc.. I guess there was a little bit of that in the video, but I could not tell if it was just the guy filming or not.

The laptop not moving much makes me think the camera made it look worse than it was.

At first I thought it was pretty average, but then if you notice the heads of the passengers moving back and forth, it's clear that it's pretty bumpy. Not severe, but definitely on the heavier side of things.

Listening to the noises, that was pretty heavy chop. Laptops move with the tables anyway so you would generally not see it move. Yeah the heads get jolted in unison a few times. Definitely a lot of camera shake, but the cabin creak indicates a rough ride.

I think the noise makes a rough ride a lot worse (even though it is loose objects in the plane/bins rattling) it sounds like the fuselage is breaking up!

Looks very uncomfortable, but I wouldn't call it severe.

After about 300 flights, the only two that I can recall being bad were an AA F-100 from ORD to SWF. The plane bounced around pretty much like the video above. It didn't stop. No cabin service, you couldn't even read a newspaper or magazine. I called it "The Tigger Flight" because we bounced the entire way home. It wasn't frightening, just annoying.

The only flight I can recall being afraid of was many years ago on an AA DC-10 from BUF to LGA. LGA actually closed down for a while because of weather. We just circled through it for an hour. Wind, thunderstorms, hail. It was horrible. I actually had to lay down in the back of my car after landing until I could compose myself well enough to drive.

I agree, either intentionally or unintentionally, the camera shake probably makes it seem worse. It's kind of hard to video bumps. There were a couple of ripples that seemed to make other passengers move but it seems fairly routine to me. I'm sure any seasoned traveller has been in worse, goodness knows I have. My own benchmark is to put a glass of water, half-filled, on the tray. Would the bumps have dislodged or spilled the water on this flight? Perhaps but there was not a 50 foot dipper or drop on this video.

This appears to be an E190. I recall this being a topic once but it is my belief that the E190 series, and maybe the E170/5 too, seems to be more susceptible to turbulence than some other aircraft. I've noticed that Boeing 757s don't seem to suffer from as much severe turbulence as, say, an A320 but it is all relative and hard to tell. Obviously physics and the size of the aircraft makes a difference too. A Cessna 152 is going to be very bumpy compared to a larger aircraft. And B747s seem to glide gently through all but the roughest of skies.

Agreed! I was on a US 737-400 flight a couple of weeks ago from CLT-BWI. We didn't fly through any storms, per se, but it was windy all along the East Coast and I think they said the jet stream was moving or something. Anyway, we shook back and forth for the entire hour-long flight. As we were climbing, boy was that plane creaking and moaning and squeaking! I'm usually okay with most lighter turbulence, but the squeaking and rattling on this flight was sending my nerves over the edge!

My mom says that in 37 years of flying, her worst experience was a couple of years ago on a 777 NRT-IAD. They hit about 15-20 minutes of turbulence over the Pacific that was bad enough to overturn a drink cart in the galley (they were in the middle of a meal service at the time). She said the noise the cart made when it fell over was terrible and made everybody in the back of economy scream.

It's funny because when you watch this video YouTube recommends a bunch of other videos that claim to depict EXTREME/SEVERE!!!! turbulence - none of which are that impressive. Sometimes when I'm bored though I'll watch YouTube takeoff/landing videos, those are pretty fun...

I know, those get me going too. But in all fairness, these people who post "extreme/severe" turbulence probably don't fly much and that the one trip they took, they thought what they experienced was terrifying, when to those seasoned travellers, it was nothing more than a nuisance.

Personally, having seen the aircraft cabin twice from being plastered to the ceiling, being thrown to the floor and having to grab the seat frame to hold on and, finally, finding myself under an overturned beverage cart, what the OP went through was nothing.

It is all in your personal experiences.

meh, moderate at best. this happens more often than you think. i had a landing at BWI a couple of years ago where we were pitching, rolling, moving violently all over the place. i looked at it this way: people pay huge money for roller coasters. getting zero g seat time as a passenger is like a free bonus.

it was fun to watch passenger reactions. some dug their nails into their arm rests. others tried to continue to read their books. others smiled and cheered.

to me, videos of the strength of airplane wings that i've seen on this site over the year have taught me that planes can take a huge amount of abuse. so i have religious-like faith in our engineers and figure we'll be down soon enough -- all in one piece.

All you guys are funny that are like "meh, not bad", or "I have been in worse back in 1994" First of all very few, if any of you are actual airline pilots that deal with this stuff every single day so your opinions are not very valid.
Either way its tough to tell exactly what type of turbulence or chop it is because of obvious camera movement. Based on the noise and how much peoples heads were moving I would feel safe in saying that is easily continuous moderate chop and turbulence. At the beginning of the video when the pilot is speaking, I would say that would be continuous light, then obviously moves into the moderate. Looks like they were all gettin thrown around pretty good at that point

I was flying PHX-LAX last week and it was so smooth, and then while we were descending through approx 8k ft, there was this huge thud. It felt like we went over a big speed bump. It was very quick and violent; less than a second. A lot of people screamed out of surprise and the flight attendant's eyes got very wide.

I've never felt or experienced anything like it in my many miles of flying. I thought we had hit something because it came out of nowhere and lasted so shortly. We made a small course diversion shortly after, so my guess is we hit someone's wake momentarily.

Well yes them to absolutely, but I was using the pilots as an example since they are the ones that would be classifying it as a specific type of turbulence for arguements sake. I do agree though, the entire cabin crew has to deal with that kind of stuff.

Looks like decent enough turbulence... the person on the computer is ace, though. I basically give up trying to work as soon as anything more than light turbulence starts. Anyway, if you don't fly a lot, the words "moderate" and "severe" are entirely relative. Heck, they can be relative even if you DO fly a lot.

Cue my own story: on descent into Kobe, Japan back in 2006 or so our ANA 767 went right through a storm and we were in what I can only imagine was severe turbulence for a good fifteen minutes. I had bruises on my head because things were moving so violently I couldn't keep my head from hitting the wall (I was in a window seat). Bins were popping open, bags were flying out, the whole nine yards. People were screaming and crying, even the FAs were looking a little pale, haha. I came pretty close to kissing the ground after that one. The upside is that most turbulence doesn't really bug me now -- although I definitely don't want to experience that again if I can help it.

I was working that day at JFK on the ramp. Some of the heaviest winds sustained we've had in sometime. My buddy flew in from TPA into JFK and said the turbulence was insane and he travels once a week by air. One of my flights came in from ROC and I asked the FO when he was doing the walk around how it was coming in. He told me they had a clean up on aisle three. LMAO Guess they didn't make it to the barf bag. But yeah, I remember that day. Very windy and caught a couple missed approaches. BTW, that's some bad turbulence. I mean, your not gonna crap in pants but still, even the most seasoned traveler is gonna be opened eyed. Now when you start dipping hundreds of feet up and down is some series stuff but don't brush off the video so much.

We will never see a severe turbulence video because you are scared, you are shitting your pants, screaming or covering yourself for all the things thrown around.

I have been to several bumpy rides myself, but 2 that stand out are not those full of jolts for 3 hours, but instead, those perfectly smooth and then the hell for soho minutes.

1) Going to land in MEX the pilot announces that moderate turbulence has been stopped al all elves used for landing, so he tells us that there eis no problem but we will have a bumpy ride, everyone seated with seatbelt , no lavatories, instructs the crew of no service everything secured. 3 minutes later it starts as if someone is actually jolting the A320, it lasted like 5 minutes, 4 or 5 drops, the overhead compartments sounded like they were coming down and one panel fell in the aisle. Pukeing all around, screams and I just kept holding my seatbelt and seeing the wing.... when we landed it was a greaser, everyone clapped, the FA quickly put a large rug to cover the countless pukes on the aisle ...

2) Smooth ride, going SFO LAX on Delta like 15 years ago in the morning, when the captain announced we began descending and approach, there was a large drop, with noise from the engines, and it lasted less than a minute but in that minute the AC (a 737) banked left and right and dropped, I really got scared because the banking was so violent I felt like and old star trek movie... afterwards all calm...

The biggest scares are when they are sudden in my case.

I was on a Skywest Brazilia on finals into SFO when we suddenly made a leftward roll that was steeper than any I've ever experienced any aircraft roll before or since. We didn't make it to 45°, but I'd estimate it was at least 30°. The amazing part was that we made a little course diversion and then landed safely about 60-120 seconds later. I was really expecting to go around. Obviously, it was someone's wake vortex. The captain never made a comment about it.

Not to be pedantic, but this video was apparently shot a year ago so it is hardly "news". Bad turbulence happens on not just some airlines but EVERY airline, of course. You can type in the name of almost any major airline into YouTube followed by the word "turbulence" and a video will pop up.
As for being born under a bad sign, I think B6 is doing OK. They are still safe despite the unfortunate incident in the news this week - which was admittedly very shocking - but I really don't think the airline is cursed or has a hex on them. After all, wasn't it DL that almost lost an aircraft this month in ATL? Neither event resulted in a tragic outcome, thank goodness, but both serve as reminders that all crews have to remain alert, vigilant, and expect the unexpected. I'm not a pilot or a FA but I imagine that's advice no matter what the color of your uniform is.

I remember back in the late 80's flying aboard a UsAir 737-200 from DCA to BDL. The plane was rocking and rolling all the way up to Hartford. But what made the whole situation downright funny was the fact that there were about 50 to 60 Spanish exchange students aboard the flight who were having the time of their lives. Every time the plane took a bounce, drop, or jolt, everybody would wave their hands in the air and yell "OLE!!!" Even the flight attendants strapped in their jumpseats were playing along! What could have been nervewracking ended up being downright funny!

what day was this? Flew LAX-CDG in late November and the flight from about Nebraska to the Ocean was nonstop, moderate to severe turbulence I would say...

The problem is there are usually these things hanging off the wings called engines, and occasionally (ok, very rarely) poor maintenance can cause them to detach. That's what I always have in the back of my mind when a plane I'm flying in hits sustained and heavy turbulence. Stuff does break, not because it's not built well, but because it's not always maintained well.

My worst turbulence was in a Northwest 747 flying JFK-NRT (my most regular route). Large side to side and up and down jolts, what felt like some insane bank angles, and when I looked out at the engines, they were bouncing around so much that they were almost facing each other occasionally. I didn't know engine pylons could be that flexible. All I could think about watching that was that Evergreen 747 a long time ago.

I thought we had hit something because it came out of nowhere and lasted so shortly. We made a small course diversion shortly after, so my guess is we hit someone's wake momentarily.

I've had that happen too. The last time, the captain actually came on the PA and apologized for the "wake-up call" and said we had hit the jetwash of a plane ahead of us.

One time flying ATL-MEM we had to sit on the runway for a while as a pretty solid t-storm passed over. I started talking to the lady across the aisle and she was really nervous about the storm and if there would be turbulence, I mentioned that I'm a weirdo and I actually like a little turbulence to keep the flight interesting. She said she would watch me and if I seemed alarmed about any turbulence she would know to panic - so of course during the flight it occurred to me that I could terrify this poor woman just by pretending to freak out a bit if we hit some bumps. I didn't of course but it was an entertaining thought...

How do pilots feel about moderate or severe turbulence? Does it ever worry them? Even when the aircraft is barely controllable?

what day was this? Flew LAX-CDG in late November and the flight from about Nebraska to the Ocean was nonstop, moderate to severe turbulence I would say...

It was on Nov 13th. We hit very bad turbulence above the Rockies

My 2 were both NW, first was a DC-10 HNL-SFO, flight attendants were strapped in for about half the way to SFO, then it was an increase in altitude that did the trick, funny enough we arrived way ahead of schedule. flying time was 3h 45m,
second was a 72S MSP-MIA, landing in MIA right as a huge black bank of clouds started covering the airport, pilot was talking about landing in TPA, I was meeting my buddy who had flown AA with miles from PDX, his DFW connex was quicker than my MSP connex was, so he was already on the ground, MIA shut down right after we landed for a while.

Not anything that would scare me. I like turbulence and I have seen much worse.
The thing though, it seems to me that turbulence always seems worse in the back of the airplane than up front.

I wonder why that is?

The E190 is long and thin with large wings - just like the B737-800 I work on, and turbulence always feels more unruly on long thin aircraft, especially at the back.

Two years ago, 180 pax SCREAMED for several minutes during take-off and climb as we encountered really rough winds and the aircraft bounced, shook and fell repeatedly. I was tightly strapped in sitting on my aft jumpseat, but I still had to hold on to my seat and my legs smashed into the escape slide several times (had bruises to prove it). When at cruise level, I walked through the cabin to see if any pax wanted to talk to me, but everyone had a glazed look in their eyes - like no-one was home. After landing, deboarding was the quickest I have seen so far, everyone just wanted to get out of there...

Since then, I have a lot of respect for turbulence. I'm not bothered much by it when on active duty, but I'm not a fan of it when deadheading or flying as a pax. Many of my colleagues feel the same. Most pilots seem pretty oblivious to how rough turbulence can be at the back - they only have light bumps up front while the coffee pots hit the ceiling at the back.
Come, fly the prevailing winds with me

I thought the best place to be for turbulence was the closest to the centre of gravity as possible. I thought that was just basic physics. I don't see why it would be better up front than in the back.

I can't even imagine what would happen if someone was in a lavatory when severe turbulence
suddenly hits!

This seems quite bumpy, and the pilot did a good job warning everyone, but the doesn't even come close to some of the heavier stuff I have been through. I think its funny...the customer that just kept on working on her laptop through the entire thing...gotta meet that deadline LOL!!!

She may have been writing touchy feeley stuff she was too embarrassed to share with her loved onces, romantic squeezes and BFF's. Maybe she was giving instructions on who'd get the doggies and pussy cats if this turbulence turned into a big time disaster. Sorry if my sick humor offends anyone.

Put a doll in a cardboard box and shake it really hard. That's basically what would happen.

(I was actually in the lav when we hit some moderate-sized bumps on NRT-JFK (NH 773) a couple of weeks ago (seatbelt sign had been off, no announcements, no serious bumps aside from that, so I had taken the chance to go). If I had been sitting down it wouldn't have been so bad, but the physics of trying to stay stable while doing a #1 was interesting, to say the least.)
