Nice! And a nice competition to the AF 380 that also serves IAD! (At least for connecting pax)

Makes sense. * hub, short enough to do 1 RT per day w 1 aircraft, high premium market, not as delay prone as EWR.

I was pretty sure that PVG would get the 748i first but I guess I was wrong.

You've been holding on to that for a while now...fitting that you should be the one to finally announce it!

PVG couldn't be the first route as it cannot be flown with one airplane, you need two for the PVG run.

Yeah, it was difficult to hold it back, but when Dr. Franz announced it, then it is official.

This is awesome news! I can't wait to fly on the 748i of LH.
I would have guessed JFK or NRT but IAD is a very smart choice.

Go go Lufthansa!

My LH source did not lie (as per other thread). Now, I owe him a bottle of wine ... but little "price" to be on the inaugural  .

Great news.

I am sure this has been discussed before but how does LH justify operating both the 748 and the A388?

Well one aspect is that the 748 will ultimately replace the 744.

There are many airports that need the capacity but can't handle the A380.

My guess is A380 will remain at SFO, 748 will go to LAX from FRA. A346 continues from MUC.

LAX could only start with a third 748. Block time for LAX is 11/12 hours. 8.5/9.5 hours for IAD. Not enough turn time if cycled. But add in ORD at 8.5/9.5, and you get about 50 hours of block time a day, or 17 hours per bird, which is plenty of turn time at 7 hours a day. Just need to work out the scheduling.

Summer A380 to SFO, winter 744 to SFO. And MIA the other way around.

No sorry. DEN is 346 currently, so doubt there is a market for so many seats.

Makes so much sense to see this route started first. Will any other flights be undertaken to get familiar with the aircraft first, for instance FRA-LHR or similar or is it straight into IAD.

Would have been nice to see the 747 with Space Shuttle Discovery on top and the 748i at Dulles on the same day but I guess the timings won't be right for that.

I wonder how LH will organize the very first passenger flight on the IAD route if they will do a charity auction or just a normal flight where everybody can take a chance and buy off the LH website.

At least those with elite Gold/Senator + statuses will have a nice LH lounge at IAD when they fly back to Frankfurt.

What will be interesting is what crew training flights they will have. I am aiming for one, maybe a couple of those, possibly the first one. Will have to put my own Mr Lufthansa on alert for that.

There was a better way to fly it was called Concorde

While both aircraft are high capacity, having 2 VLA allows LH to position capcity where it is needed most at a particular time. With their very large fleet they can absorb the incidental costs of 2 VLA types in service.

Quoting wilco737 (Reply 33):

This is a very simple but perfect example of how LH could use both types to offset any seasonality issues in their current route network.

I was doing some research and it seems the A388 has 536 seats and the 748I will have about 380 seats. Therefore, it makes sense to use both, especially with the changing loads as mentioned here. It would not make sense to do the 2 a/c types as a smaller operator. Thanks guys.
