Why Haven't We Seen Any Retro Livery On Delta?

Fri Mar 30, 2012 6:39 pm

I was looking through many of the different airlines that have done or have retro painted planes out there, and wondered why we haven't seen any from Delta? I would love to see one of their aircraft painted in the old widget, or even an earlier scheme than that.
Any one have any info on why we haven't seen any from then while many others have done so?
Thanks.

Can't answer the "why" ... but I believe their last "retro" liveries were both worn by Ship 102 ...

One was the special 75th anniversary scheme used for the final year or so of Ship 102's service

And the other was its original Widget livery for its farewell tour (and which it still wears on the Delta Heritage Museum)

Probably because we're in the process of reconfiguring most of our international fleet. "The Spirit of Delta" is in one, in fact it's been in 2. I suspect once some sort of anniversary comes up, you'll probably see one at some point. We have a few special liveried aircraft, Some Skyteam, BCRF and Habitat for Humanity schemes flying around though.

Funny I thought most of the fleet was in a retro livery a couple years ago... oh wait..

I think some would argue that it took so long to get the fleet unified (widget, 2007 livery, flag livery and newest design) that anyone that would bring up the idea of a retro livery would get walked out

Probably because it would be a waste of money - which it is. When dealing with insane fuel costs are you going to throw away money on a paint job that you won't see while walking through the jetway or seated on the aircraft. Just not a priority I would guess.

I started out thinking I'd like to see an example of the old crown livery on a 744 but that got me thinking that the 744 might be more appropriate in the original 1970's NW scheme. From there;

A "crown" 767
An RW MD80.
An SO MD80
An RC 757
An NC MD80

I could go on.

When you think about, Delta has already done the "retro jet" thing, as there has been times in which they had three different liveries floating around (four if you count the Song livery). There was about a four year period (2000-2004) in which Delta had a/c in the "original" Widget livery, the 1997 livery (AKA Ron Allen Livery) and the 2000 livery (Commonly referred to around here as the Deltaflot or Wavy Gravy livery) not to mention the Song livery. Then a few years later, we were back to this again with the introduction of the current livery in 2007. The a/c in the Song and the 1997 livery were the first to receive the new livery so not to have a repeat of when the 2000 livery came out.

If Delta decides to do a retro jet thing again, I'd love to see the following liveries from Delta's history put on a/c:

Maybe if the rumors of DL getting the 717 pans out, they could paint some of them in Bonanza, Air West, North Central, Southern, the sideways Delta widget livery and West Coast Airlines liveries......

I'd like to see something in the original black & orange, Delta Air Service livery, used on the Travelair.

Or Norfolk Southern and Union Pacific Railroads who have also done retro liveries of their older paint schemes or predecessors. Norfolk Southern's forthcoming line-up is by far the most impressive. UP's were more like a caricature than an accurate rendition of the old paints.

Apparently, these other companies all find value in the good publicity even if it doesn't directly show up as a short term gain on some beancounter's spreadsheet.

Now if Delta did a retro jet for all the airlines that make up Delta today would they have any planes actually painted in their own colors     Gotta admit Delta could have some really cool retro jets should they choose to do them. I'm sure its all about the

All those classic vintage liveries are great and would be cool with the exception of the Fugly Western livery with the curved design on the tail.

And, DL should have kept their classic widget livery (767) pictured. It is a timeless legendary design iconic like the Pan Am Globe. Sorry DL all your liveries since are letdowns. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Too much change.

I suppose you could go nuts, painting a/c in colors representing ALL the airlines that have made up DL (including the root airlines), but maybe, to simplify things, you could do retro paintjobs in just the carriers that made up DL thru mergers........Chicago & Southern, Northeast, Western, PanAm, Northwest.......of course, in the case of PanAm, DL would have to get permission as they don't have the rights to that livery.

Yeah, my vote is for a B737G or 738 in the next to last western livery, white fuselage, big red W with red cheatline.

I have had to remove a number of off-topic posts from this thread. This thread is about potential Delta retro jets if they were to do some. It is not about other airlines' retro jets nor is it to discuss one's feelings about previous Delta CEOs. Please stay on topic or this thread will be locked.

Who was that outfit doing the Western airlines out of Mesa, AZ a couple years back...went to GYY, I think? I always like the livery: "The Swizzle Stick." I actually still have a swizzle stick from Western from that era. Loved it.

Is it just me, or does the 319/320 generally wear ANY livery pretty well? It seems as though all the US retros look good on the 319, regardless of the type of plane it was first on.

I think the "good will" and public reaction to special paint jobs is worth doing them. They have to be painted anyway...line a few ideas up, and then pick your fleet. The next X # in that fleet up for heavy checks w/paint get the retro.

That's also a really good point. I had this idea just as I posted the question. It seemed like the transition from 2007 livery to the flag livery took really long. It probably took no longer than others, but around here it seemed those two were always mixed and it was always changing.
Thanks for all the input, I also hope we can see some of those older schemes around sometime soon.

Having designed repaints for Flight Sim for both the A32x and 737 family, I think liveries transfer best to the 737.

As for Pan Am. I have been looking into this lately due to the fact I want to acquire and restore a DC-7C into a Pan Am plane.

I thought maybe I would have to have permission to do so, but then I started looking into things. Pan Am Systems (the new Pan Am Railroad) is technically not Pan American World Airways. Previously they did have a Pan Am airlines, but they were shut down by the FAA and certificates were permanently removed. So there is no way a Pan American World Airways can ever again be flown with the Pan Am Systems holding company.

So then I started looking into trademark laws. Trademarks are not ever lasting. If the trademark is not used, it can be canceled as well, normally after 5 years of non-use, at which point another party can request the trademark. The last Pan Am airline closed over 5 years ago.

The thing I don't know about however, is since they purchased the entire corporate profile/trade mark of Pan American World Airways (All logos, specific Colors, names, etc), can individual pieces be used freely due to the fact that they are not being used by Pan Am Systems.

Also there was a part about the same thing being used in completely different areas. For example, having an airplane painted in Pan Am colors using the same logos would have no bad affect on Pan Am systems nor cause Customer confusion.

Personally, my non-legal opinion would say that anyone can paint an aircraft that has Pan American World Airways on it due to there being no other airlines named that and logos and colors would be free to use due to non-use by Pan Am Systems.
