Status: ANA 787's To The US?

Sat Mar 31, 2012 7:03 pm

Hello, all:

There was a bit of hype that ANA was planning on inaugurating 787 overseas service to SEA and SJC this year. However, no firm date was announced. It has been several months and ANA still seems pretty tight-lipped. Also, Boeing has delayed delivery (typical) of further 787's to ANA.

On the other hand, JAL has announced their first US 787 destinations to BOS and SAN. I think dates were announced but I don't remember what they are.

Is ANA still committed to NRT-SEA and NRT-SJC with 787's? Could it be possible that ANA have cancelled those plans?

No, not at all. This was just discussed in a Seattle Times article the other day.

As NH takes more and more deliveries, a lot of us here in the Japanese and Japanese-interest community in Phoenix almost expect NH or JL to add a 787 flight to PHX. When that happens is unsure, and all dependent on US's presence (for Star Alliance connections, etc)

But to answer the OPs question, These have been routes that NH has been committed to using the 787 on for sometime, and of course the various communities in those cities have been lobbying for as well.

Be interesting to see if UA drops their 777 NRT service once NH starts 787 operations (via HND, I would guess). Or will this be the long-rumored SEA-NGO service?

It will be SEA-NRT.

The market can probably support NH, UA and DL on SEA-NRT, but I wouldn't be surprised to see UA bow out for a *A partner. Should be interesting to see how it all shapes up.

In line with my previous point, I'd take issue with the description of SEA-NRT as a "long, thin" route. It's seen as many as three daily flights in the past decade with a mix of A330/B742/B777...

Really? I recently booked with ANA from SIN-BOS in August - the 787 wasn't offered at all from NRT - I was offered a choice of IAD and ORD connecting to UA codeshares only.

IIRC, NH and UA have TPAC revenue-sharing. Similar arrangement UA and LH have on TATL.

Just a minor adjustment to your dates, red'. SAN is announced for December of this year, but no specific day of the month yet; the flights are not yet for sale either. I assume the booking status will be changed to "open for sale" when the exact start date is released. (There was some confusion at the time of the orginal announcement and "12-12" was thought to mean "December 12" rather than the intended "December 2012".) Here's a link to the JAL website's 787 route map:
http://www.jal.co.jp/en/787/rosen_02.html

I could be wrong about this and missed an announcement with an exact date so I will be happy to be corrected if necessary.

JAL is starting these routes...not ANA. ANA is starting SEA and SJC.

I'm thinking the booking and exact date for SAN-NRT will be revealed right after the BOS-NRT launch.

NH facilities and IT staff made a visit to SEA last month to arrange for ticketing and ramp office space. Although nothing has been officially announced, based on the rather aggressive schedule they have set to have these up and running it appears that they intend to inagurate service sooner rather than later. My guess is they will start before the end of the summer if not before. Rumor has it that they will use T73s on the route in the event enough 87s haven't been delivered by the time they start.

As far as UA bowing out of the SEA-NRT route, who knows? Just last week DL started up the SEA-CDG route after SkyTeam partner AF dropped it a week ago however UA isn't in the same financial condition as AF. The traffic between SEA-NRT should be able to absorb a new entrant especially since NH has made no secret of its plans to target higher end travelers.

UA has been pretty tight-lipped about their post merger plans for SEA. They are currently planning for their new gates on Concourse A after they leave the North Satellite and the former CO gates on Concourse B early next year. There are two unused clubs on Concourse A (the old Admiral's Club near Gate A7 and the former Delta Crown Room further down by A12) that they are looking at renovating and there has been some chatter about new routes to compete with DL. Should be interesting to see how it all plays out in the coming months.

I'm still pretty convinced that UA will continue to decrease ops at SEA. The next draw-down I predict is the elimination of Skywest EMB-120 service. Although as others have mentioned, NH might take over UA's service. As you mentioned, it will be interesting what happens in the coming months.

A simple look at a calendar reveals that the 12th isn't even on the days it'll fly here, which is Mon, Tue, Thur, Sat. I see what you mean, could have been just the excitement playing a role. So it's either the 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th.

I have to agree, I see UA using their code sharing with NH to cover the SEA-NRT run, using their 777 someplace else. Again I agree we will see the OO EMB's head out of the NW entirely, leaving routes UA still competes with AS/QX on all to QX/AS. Too bad, it's not like UA is keeping QX honest, when flying a 25 min flight PDX-RDM costs nearly 200 bucks advance purchase, on either carrier. Other routes like SEA-PDX etc... too bad, as NH could use the NW feed for their NRT flight.
Next Flights: PDX-HNL-OGG-LIH-PDX On AS, WP & HA

ANA has been advertising hot and heavy in the DC area over the past few months. Could this be hinting at 787 service? Perhaps NH001/NH002 would be changed from a 777 to 787. Seems these are high prestige routes (I know, money is the only consideration).

Since their 787 will not have first class, I don't think I would call it a " high Perstigious" route. The 787 is for long thin routes that cannot fill a 777W.

I think the 77W would be overkill. If the 787 was not available at the time service inauguration, I would imagine ANA would use either 777-200ER or even a 767-300ER.
