Norwegian To Feature Black Metal Guitarist On Tail

Sun Apr 01, 2012 9:03 am

A few weeks back, Norwegian DY announced that they would make a competetion online. They would have a public election as to who should be featured on the tail fins of one of their new aircraft. Now, I do not think that Norwegian would have imagined this scenario.

The internet being the internet, the primary voting is now over. This voting phase should narrow down the candidates before the final voting begins on April 11th. In the lead of the primary voting was Oeystein Aarseth, black metal guitarist from the band Mayhem. Now, here are some features of Mayhem, for those of you unfamiliar with the Norwegian black metal scene.
  • - Mayhem were known for being associated with church arsons.

  • - Lead singer, "Dead", slit his wrists and shot himself in his and Aarseth's(Euronymous) house. Leaving a briefe suicide note "Excuse all the blood".

  • - Euronymous picked up fractions of Dead's skull and made necklaces out of these. He later on passed some of these necklaces to musicians he found 'worthy'.

  • - Euronymous himself was stabbed to death in '93 by fellow musician Varg Vikernes.

Now, of course Norwegian have some disclaimers. One of them being "Haleheltene er en viktig identitetsbærer for vår merkevare og kandidaten må derfor være en vi kan identifisere oss med" - translating to something alike "The Tail Fin Heroes is an important flag carrier for our brand, and the canditate must be someone, with whom we can identify ourselves" - which means it is highly unlikely - at least from my perspective - that we'll ever see a DY aircraft with Euronymous featured on the tail.

Your thoughts?

Aarseth's family has said they don' want to be identified with Norwegian ( wisely decision) and are anyway refusing DY to use his picture, so he won't be on any Norwegian tail.

The family of Joakim "Jokke" Nilsen made the same decision, so he was withdrawn from the vote when he was leading it a few weeks back

Varg won't be happy!

I'm a huge metal fan, and I'd love to see him on one of DY's tails. However my head says that, given the circumstances, this would be a bad idea. Especially considering Norwegian war hero Trond André Bolle is second place.

Why did they refuse to be identified with Norwegian? I thought it was a respected company in the Nordic region?

Well, some people don't want to be associated with a brand. I think that was the main reason Jokke was taken off. The family didn't want his image to become advertising, which is basically what happens when your face is plastered onto the tail of an aircraft.

I can understand people not wanting to get on the tail, even though I don't see it as directly being used as advertising, rather some good recognition of being a true norwegian (or scandinavian).

Cool, thanks for that. You are right, it is not about personal promotion but rather the promotion of the culture of the country you come from.

Pity they refused it. The people now on the tails can be a bit stuffy, I believe not even Astrid Lindgren has a tail yet... There might be rules about living people (in case they turn out criminals late in their lives) but wouldn't some band tails like Abba, Aha be cool, or the Swedish chef from the Muppets? Or personally I'd love to see Nils Örstred Henning Pedersen, the amazing late jazz bass player. On the other hand the Scandinavian royal family members are also missing, I wouldn't mind to see some of these too although that might also be controversial to use in a commercial operation by a non state carrier.
nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

Too bad they didn't get permission, it would have been fantastic! I love Norwegian Black Metal and aviation so I'm all for it. Maybe they can choose a different artist (Varg, Gaahl, Hoest or Shagrath), however I doubt they would give permission for it.

In the competition thing they have, it states that people can only nominate dead people and Norwegian will not put someone alive on one of their tails.

I'm a bit curious about who will be put on the 787's. I'm assuming (and hoping) it will be one of the more famous Norwegian's that already are on some of the 737's, like Amundsen, etc.

Somebody mentioned Varg. My question is how in the world would he be a good choice to be an image if he murdered a.fellow musician. Now I don't know the story behind it, but I would imagine that being frowned upon so why would Norwegian want that image on one of their tails. I'm not sure black medal artists are the way to go. Just my opinion.

Who says Norwegian wanted him in the first place ? It is the Norwegian general public that nominates people and therefore all kinds of people get nominated. Ultimatly it is Norwegian themselves who makes the ultimate desicion if the person has met the criteria ( getting aproval from relatives being one of them ) and put the person on a tail. Maybe Norwegian was quite happy that they did'nt get approval from his family ?

Considering that living people are off limits, I am hoping for Julie Ege ( actress in several 70's movie and also 007 Bond girl in OHMSS ) or Trond Andre Bolle, a member of the specialforces of Norway.

Didn't know that, that surely brings it to an end. Anyways, still an interesting discussion.

I agree. I wouldn't want to put someone like Dead or Euronymous on my aircraft. It's simply too much. What they represent, I wouldn't want my airline to be associated with. (Just as I wouldn't want my company to advertise on any FR jet, hence another ongoing discussion on the site). I'd love to plaster metal musicians on my aircraft, say Gojira for some French airline - as they are more 'down-to-earth'(Read: Let's not slaughter each other).
I don't know, it just doesn't feel right to plaster someone that ran around with his friend's face in a necklace on your aircraft.

Not that this would be a suitable place to discuss what is true metal, but you might want to turn back time to '86 and a little something called Master of Puppets   While it may not be Dimmu Borgir or Mayhem, it certainly qualifies as metal.

I guess putting Varg Vikernes would be in poor taste?

I have been a big Mayhem fan for years, but they were a big part of a very controversial time in Norwegian history where churches were burned often. I would love to see a black metal musician on a DY tail, but I would have thought someone from Darkthrone, Dimmu Borgir, Satyricon, Emperor, or Abbath would be a better choice.
It is what it is...

If they put Lars Ulrich on there they'll jump to #1 on my "don't fly on this airline" list, surpassing Ryanair. But of course Metallica *loves* money, so something could be worked out.

They wouldn't want to be associated with your airline either, probably. Although I hear Dead used to bring birds on stage quite often.

Ummm... DY is still a commercial carrier, which should be opposed to black metal's philosophy. I don't know why the family wouldn't allow it but anyway... I don't think Euronymous would've approved.

Now, the guys still in Dimmu Borgir would probably jump all over this opportunity. But they're still alive.

Anyway, there are better musicians in Norway, like Simen Hestnaes and Jan Axel von Blomberg.

Question for the OP: what about musicians who were killed by drugs? Would they make your list for your airline?

On this one, I completely agree with you. My first thought when I read the title was that this must be an April Fool's thread (as I was well prepared this year), so I was completely shocked when I opened the article you provided and saw that it is a few days old.

I'm not religious, I don't believe in God, I'm open-minded, but having read a few articles about... ugh, I don't even know how to call them..., I was left completely shocked that DY did not remove them from the contest.

Yuck...

I too am into the Norwegian metal scene of all types of their metal.

I think they should put Liv Kristine of Leaves Eyes/former Theater of Tragedy vocalist on there, or one of the chicks that used to sing for the band 3rd and the Mortal.

No one mentioned Old Man's Child.

If you ask me, if DY was to feature a black metal band, they should use the faces from Immortal or Dimmu Borgir's logo, though the rather sucks these days IMO

case in point, if you give the internet food, they will devour it

That was probably their last good work, although I always like the black album. Pretty much everything since has been over-produced and largely homogenous.

Oddly enough, I just saw my cousins' band do their version of Lepper Messiah last week. What makes that special is that they're a seven piece brass band. It was an interesting sound to say the least...
