Pm United Using 320s Our Of EWR

Mon Apr 02, 2012 8:29 pm

I just noticed that UA Flight 501, EWR to MIA tonight is an A319. So post-merger United is already moving 319/320 to EWR? Didn't think it would be that quick. Does this mean they have based 319s/320s here or is this a routing issue similar to US Airways, where they route legacy Amer West metal thru Philly but they aren't based there? Will be nice seeing the 320 family dressed in the new livery around EWR.

I'm flying UA 501 EWR-MIA on 4/22 with a PMUA 757. The cross fleeting is starting this month officially.

Quoting richiemo (Thread starter):

throughout the spring and summer, looks like PMUA 320s and 319s will be on:

EWR-MIA/MCO/BOS/LAS/DFW/ORD/DEN/TPA/PHX/PDX/SEA/CLE

And similarly PMUA 757s on:

EWR-LAX/SFO/MCO/MIA/ORD/DEN/BOS/SEA/IAH

I might be missing a few. Keep in mind that IAH will see quite a few more 319/320 variations than EWR. Even CLE-SEA/MCO/TPA/LAX will see PMUA 757s

They are in Houston as well, started on Sunday. Not sure how many there will be on a daily basis but I've seen them going to TPA, DCA, PHL, for starters, also IIRC BOS which some days of the week will be a PM UA B752.

Its more widespread than that, LGA on some days gets 2 or 3 752s from IAH. I'm scheduled on UA230 LGA-IAH on a 752 on 4/16. So far they have all still been operating off of the 2-3 gates on C north...I don't know how though, those ramp guys must be busy because Sunday was a big expansion of PMUA flying at IAH.

Oh I know it's more cities, just didn't have the entire list.

They will need to start using more than those Terminal C gates on the northwest side that is for sure, any rumors if they'll mingle over to Terminal E or other C gates?

Yes only three gates out of C north. By summer they will have to use other gates as there are many more airbuses that will be added to the schedule

Shocking...seems PMUA be should be pulling out of non-competitive P2P CLE markets and adding more capacity to oversaturated ones out of EWR, ORD, IAD and so on instead....

WHAAAA!!!!?
That would be great, how would it be routed through IAH though? We had a lengthy conversation on here about that before as this rumor surfaced a few months ago.

And park it where, Terminal D? Otherwise it will make more of a mess at Terminal E than already exists around 1045 AM.

If that's the only 744 into IAH, then it would have to be retimed and blow connections at NRT or have a 20+ hour layover in IAH. Maybe that's OK if IAH is going to do maintenance.

Adding other 744 services at IAH wouldn't make much sense. Domestic flights just burn up aircraft time. The IAH-NRT flight is too early to turn it from a Europe-IAH flight, but it could be teamed up with a IAH-South America trip, taking 3 aircraft - not likely IMHO.

We'll go from the mild crossfleeting increases to basically full fleet integration. An increase of nearly 80%.

I heard from an employee that C-16 has markings for a 747 on the ground. However, there is not great way to make it work at terminal E.

Well, until a decent solution to parking a 744 at E they can park at D for international arrivals and depart from C16 if need be - when/if UA decides to use the 744 at IAH. Now back in the late 80s and early 90s CO 747s could use North Concourse C around C22 etc - but I think they reconfigured those gates. In fact majority of the domestic widebody ops for CO back in the day were from C North. HAS is also converting another D gate to widebody use to reclaim the space lost by the A380.

I don't think there would be any problem having an inbound international 747 arrive at D and tow it over to C-16 (or wherever) for its departure. D obviously has space for 747s and the arriving int'l pax experience at D is pretty much the same as E, since they share the FIS.

Looking at Google Earth, it appears to me that if E 21 and 22 were shifted to be more straight in, then E21 could be utilized for a 748 with the aircraft's nose pointing toward the tail of the aircraft on E22 (parallel to the 772 alignment on E19) With the 748 being 250 feet long and a wingspan of 225, I think that would fit within the white lines that mark the service roadway. The question would be if the Y Jetway would reach door 2 without modification.

It looks like the same general features are also at Gates E 5-9.

Additionally, if you were to use two gates C 17 & 18, a 748 could fit with the jetway from each gate serving doors 1 and 2. However, I don't think that hold room has enough space for a jumbo as it shares space with a couple other gates at the end of that concourse.

Perhaps the CLE routings actually justify the 757? LAX-CLE, CLE-MCO and CLE-SFO seem to be getting filled up nicely. Enjoy it while it lasts!
