It's been awesome seeing the growth at PDX in the last few years.

Fascinating addition. I can't imagine there's much O&D...perhaps scheduled for aircraft utilization and connecting traffic.

Didn't this used to be a -200 route before the Q400s came in? IIRC QX axed a bunch of routes that didn't need the extra capacity. I seem to remember a triangle routing involving PDT (Pendleton, OR) as well.

There is some O&D - it is a 4 hour drive. The Army Corps of Engineers regional office is based in Portland. Many of its hydro dams are near the Tri-Cities. The wine industry in SE Washington generates some tourism traffic. Flight times don't work for day trips in either direction, but as the press release notes, it does work for connections to CA and HI.

It was on Q400s for a while too. It used to be part of a routing to PDT as part of EAS. Once QX lost the PDT route to SeaPort, they dropped PDX-PSC as well. If I remember there was actually a decent amount of O&D. The Tri-Cities metro area is about 250k people and it's about a 4 hour drive to Portland. In the winter it is more. So having a flight that takes 30 minutes is a big difference.

Always nice to see AS/QX expanding, but this one isn't exactly earth shattering.

AS missed the boat at PDX this week on this one. WN announces AUS. AS announces PSC. Woooo-hooooo.

When does AS announce LIH, EWR and FLL from PDX? I know DCA is subject to getting the award.

They announced summer seasonal. Not exactly a huge stamp of confidence in the market. I imagine it will be a test to see how it pans out. Hopefully it works, but there is a reason AS did a one stop through SJC instead.

Once again, AS has shown that their second hub at PDX is viable and often times preferred to SEA.

Wasn't it more like, AS/QX dropped PDT and SeaPort picked it up?

At the time the QX fleet transition to all Q400 ops was occurring, QX filed to the DOT for a change in routing PDT EAS service through SEA. PDT residents balked. After much lobbying, QX amended their proposal, proposing two alternatives to their original SEA proposal: an all-PDX option as well as a PDX/SEA hybrid proposal. The all-SEA proposal was the cheapest of the three, while the all-PDX option would have been the most expensive. SeaPort, which was starting up, came in and proposed PDT-PDX at lower cost. The PDT community then selected SeaPort as the provider of EAS service. QX in the end flew their original proposal (PDT-SEA) for a month until their contractural obligations expired.

It was usually pretty full with the Q200s and nearly all the passengers were going to or from PSC. Usually seemed like only 3-5 passengers getting on or off at PDT.
It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems with just potatoes.

I still can't believe they don't fly PDX-LIH. Seems like it would be the next Hawaii route launched.

Boy I bet they were sorry about that decision, now they have nada. Could or would AS/QX start up PDT again as a tag off the PSC flight again? I remember living in Hermiston, and driving up to PSC to catch UAE n/s to PDX years ago on J31's, at that time both QX and UAE flew the route, before that it was RW and CZ.

I think what plane could have operated this flight, is going to end up flying to DCA, But if PDX can continue to attract more direct routes on AS/QX, it will make PDX a better option to Hawaii from BZN, PSC, RDM, MFR, EUG, BOI, GEG, then maybe we'll get that PDX-LIH flight. My buddy just flew AS to LIH from PDX via SEA, he was in F and said plane to LIH was packed, both cabins and he was flying Tuesday and Thursday.

SeaPort still flies to PDT under EAS. They've dropped a lot of routes in Oregon, but they won't drop that one cause the government pays them. It's their at risk routes that they've failed at.

You are right, SeaPort always stays until the money runs out, THEN they leave. I got it wrong.

Fantastic! I'm very happy to see more expansion out of PDX. I can't wait to see how this route does.

Funny, AS has not added the route on it's route map, nor has it listed this service in it's "new" services list on the initial route map page, before it changes to a PDF.

It's still pretty early, I'd wait another week or two before expecting a change.
