AA 1882 asked to go back to the gate for a hail inspection. You can hear the hail over the tower controllers radio.

Additionally, AA just asked all their airplanes to monitor 129.05. They want to bring all their airplanes in for a hail inspection and will coordinate over that frequency (if you have a local scanner).

It's insane how many flights American has just cancelled. I wonder how bad the damage is. Flights seem to be departing from DFW again. Mostly biz jets.

Per FW Star-Telegram:

American Airlines spokesman Ed Martelle said that the carrier has canceled flights for the rest of the day out of Dallas/Fort Worth Airport.

It is inspecting 68 planes for hail damage and has diverted 37 flights. Those diverted flights are likely to end up staying where they are overnight, Martelle said.

There was also a report of a tornado that just missed the big airport, it is said to have come down near Coppel and was headed to the NE.

I remember the big storm back in 1995 that hit DFW. We had dented and broken airplanes lined up for weeks to get into the AA or DL hangers for repairs. IIRC in that storm, over 100 aircraft ranging from Saab-340s and E-110s to MD-11s and B-747s damaged.

Per flight aware cancelled flight stats http://flightaware.com/live/cancelled

American: 483 cancelled (system wide but I'd assume mostly DFW related)
American Eagle: 291 cancelled (system wide)

DFW as a whole has had 383 out-bounds and 373 in-bounds cancelled.

On first thought yes, but makes complete sense when you think about the logistics of gate space, the personel needed to inspect and shuffling 68 planes, passengers, employees, and bags being dumped into the terminal with connections, potential fines for passengers sitting on planes > 3 hours in remotes stations or DFW, the late time of day and the need to get employees home to family, etc.

The numbers being quoted are going to result in massive work for the maintenance crews and engineering to handle. The operations center is going to be struggling massively to keep the airline running. With that many planes out of service, you can expect that airplanes won't be grounded in cities waiting to get into DFW. They'll be needed to keep the rest of the operation moving via ORD, LAX, MIA, LGA, JFK, etc.

I remember working for an airline and seeing the operations center after a lightning storm swept through a hub and damaged 20 airplanes. It took 10% of the domestic fleet out of service, which created a mess. It took 3 days to get back to a full operation systemwide, and 6 airplanes were still out of service after 72 hours. People don't understand that a flight LGA-MIA might be canceled because of a tornado hitting DFW, but it is very difficult to maintain any integrity in the schedule when that many planes are taken out of service.

AA likely has less than 10 spare airplanes in their domestic fleet. With so many planes out of service at DFW, there's not much they can do to operate flights. Canceling flights immediately and bringing down the schedule fast is the best way to reset the operation and get it moving again. AA is likely treating this like a blizzard and canceling flights that don't necessarily have to be canceled to prevent additional chaos. Operating a flight just to have it spend 2 hours on the ground because there are no gates and then running out of crew time because all the crews are scattered and on different clocks creates a giant mess.

Crew time is a significant factor. When there's massive congestion and flights take very long delays, crew time runs out and mandatory rest requirements force flights that would have operated on time to be delayed and canceled and it has a ripple effect.

It is best for the passengers to just stay away from DFW. The roads are likely a mess anyway.

Between their meltdown two weeks ago and their meltdown today, truer words have never been spoken...if there's a thunderstorm ANYWHERE in the metroplex, AA pulls the plug on DFW, and it ain't pretty when they do.

This wasn't a garden variety thunderstorm though. This was a major line, and I would say if this happened at any major hub airport for any airline with the tornadic activity and hail that struck you would have the same results.

Best wishes to all of those in the DFW area, including the airline/airport employees who will be dealing with angry and stressed passengers for the next few days, at least!

One of my favorite quotes from a passenger came while on the ground waiting for a gate - where the ramp had been closed due to a strong thunderstorm and lightning:

The passenger was angry because we were not being marshalled into the gate, and had been sitting for over 15 minutes. I tried explaining to him that for the safety of the ramp crew no one could come out to marshal us in. His response? "Next time I'll fly American." I just walked away. You can't argue with stupid!
Please direct your attention to the flight attendants in the cabin...

The Passenger Bill of Rights says nothing about how an airline reacts to weather or delays other than passengers cannot be held on airplanes and they must be notified of delays. Canceling to keep the operation moving is allowed and that is what the bill of rights actually promoted.

It is a very complex office. I have not been in AA's operations center in Dallas but have been in a similarly sized one and there are a hundred people each with 3-4 computer monitors working on weather, ATC, maintenance, dispatch, airport operations, crew operations, etc.

As with all severe weather there were "hits" and "misses."

I live just south of Dallas and schools were in lockdown mode for a huge tornado that hit near the small airport at Lancaster and did substantial damage, even shutting down the major east-west Interstate 20.

My home, however, just a few miles to the west, had little rain and even some blue skies.

But watching the radar for DFW made me realize just how awful the weather was passing the airport. Despite all the damage in the Metroplex we are fortunate to have no reported injuries and especially no deaths. Grounded passengers may complain and rant, but they are alive. Diverted passengers may be inconvenienced but accommodated. In either case they are still alive and healthy.

Good job on playing it safe, DFW!

First, I hope to continue to hear no fatalities nor injuries. I hope passengers are able to find a hotel (its pretty booked up in Fort Worth...).

On a personal note: Ack! I'm working in Fort Worth this week. Hopefully enough of the mess is cleared out by Friday. (Judging by AA's load factors my last few flights, including Tuesday flights, AA will need to the weekend to clear the logjam.)

Quoting ATTart (Reply 18):

I support the move. Otherwise, how does one restart a mega-hub with 110 aircraft (or so) to inspect and who knows how many to repair. I couldn't imagine trying to deal with an airport full of delayed passengers and trying to receive incoming aircraft while dealing with a HUGE quantity of hail inspections.

I'm guessing overtime is unlimited for a couple of days for maintenance.

Seriously, if I'm delayed, I'll understand.

Per AA, they had 68 mainline and 33 Eagle aircraft that were taken out of service for inspections.

I have never heard of an airline having 68 airplanes out of service at the same time. That is extreme. Most major hubs don't even have that many airplanes on the ground at the same time.

Here is a story about AA

American spokesman Tim Smith said American and American Eagle combined cancelled about 375 D/FW departures from early afternoon onward. That represents half the 750 departures scheduled out of D/FW Airport on Tuesday by the two airlines.

Even with the worst of the storms past, the airline now has to see if the accompanying hailstorm caused any damages to airplanes, Smith said.

"One of the biggest roadblocks to getting things going is that we're going to have to do a large number of hail inspections as required by the Federal Aviation Administration," Smith saids in late afternoon. "We have to look at 68 aircraft and 33 American Eagle aircraft."

This is not the first time this has happened at DFW. We've had storms the past few years that have put several planes out of service due to hail inspection. While we don't get winter weather too often (except for winters of 2009 and 2010), spring can be nasty, but this was extreme. This was the last thing AA needed during their recovery.

I work north of DFW and live in the flight path (both of 17C) and it has been too quiet this evening. Only a few birds flying overhead. I hope everyone is okay this evening.

Check out this video. The aircraft is sitting on a taxiway being pelted by hail: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTb5vFUVxTg

Ugh - that sound makes me cringe. Each thud is money spent on cancellations, inspections and possible repairs.

Nope, and AA has special "Hail Damage Go Teams" (one for each fleet) to respond to incidents exactly like this. Last May, the exact same thing happened in DFW on a similar scale.
B-52s don't take off. They scare the ground away.
