John P. Murtha Airport And Federal Money Pit

Wed Apr 04, 2012 10:52 am

This article made my blood boil. In this age of runaway government spending, this is a prime example of how incredibly trapped we are as a nation that allows this kind of waste. It's sad to see that this is in the airline transportation sector where the money for this unnecessary airport could go to so many other air transport infrastructure needs.

This is how pork barrel spending works.

But I won't let this get too political...so I'll just say this.

The Democrat from Penn gets his airport while the Republican from Georgia gets his interchange.

You scratch my back, I scratch yours...that's why it has and will continue to happen

But at least the interchange is being used ... ?

This is as bad as MidAmerica airport in southern Illinois. Just another way to fleece the taxpayers.

This has been in the news on and off for years. It was just after "the bridge to no where", so it became "the airport for no one".

Someone may know better, but I don't think it qualifies for EAS funding anymore under the new guidelines in the FAA Reauthorization Bill. So this shouldn't be a money pit for much longer, which means Colgan will stop flying and it'll be a really fancy GA airport.

Back when the news outlets broke this story years ago when John Murtha was still alive, Republicans offered an amendment on the house floor to strip funding for this as a way of curbing pork barrel spending. Of course it failed on a party line vote, which means that the democrats didn't have the guts to take on a senior member of their leadership. This is what is wrong with washington, period.

Perhaps another airport could purchase some of the systems used there and actually put it to use?

And this airport is only two hours away from PIT according to google maps.

Murtha was a joke. He did absolutley nothing for the state or his area, except for this airport for no one.

I have a number of friends who live in and around Johnstown, and they drive to Pittsburgh (PIT) anytime they are flying. Johnstown Airport isn't even an option for them.

It's sad to see such a waste, yet Latrobe (LBE) is growing and has proven that it can support scheduled flights without any government assistance.

By the way, did i mention what a joke Murtha was? It's a shame he is still screwing us over, even after his death... I guess dead or alive he can't do any good.

You don't have to even go that far. Bud Shuster, republican also from Western PA, was a king of pork spending on transport - he chaired the relevant committee, so he had power there. championed funding for another questionable airport, Bedford County.
