VS LGW Fleet Refit Begins

Wed Apr 04, 2012 6:27 pm

http://youtu.be/4K6XnOxNRpg

Although the video shows G-VHOT which is a LHR based 747. Chances are its probably G-VROM (Ex Super Torismo) on the inside.

I guess they didn't want to confuse people by showing an Aerosur painted aircraft.

Also according to V-Flyer, VHOT is currently on its way to JFK, either that or VS has just introduced standing class.

This is G-VROM, video was taken inside the Air Livery hangar at MAN. G-VROM is due to position to HKG (once fully painted) around the end of the month for the new cabin re-fit.

How exciting, about time the LGW bird's got some fresh life put in them, now VS has extended there leases a retrofit is now feasible. There will also be a slight decrease in Y seating and a increase in W seat's

So long to the old Recaro seats and the Nova entertainment system of the LGW fleet.
This upgrade is well overdue for VS; I won't fear flying them from LGW any more

They didn't show what was going INTO the planes... any photos of the new seats/IFE systems?

I thought this rather rather strange too. I'd love to see some photos of what it'll look like when completed!

Well they cant show the new seats yet as they havent been installed yet!

Premium Economy will be the same superseats that they have on all the LHR planes and the IFE will be the JAM system seen on the current A330 fleet.

Dont VS rotate the LGW fleet with MAN?

So if flying VS from MAN it is likely that you could be on board a 747 with a new cabin?

The work was carried out in the Gatwick hangar before the aircraft positioned to Manchester. I was outside replacing the APU on G-VHOT when the work was carried out. The following shift I departed ROM to Manchester, it was a very impressive take off - 35000kg fuel, no seats other than A zone, only 2 crew and full power used.

Any idea on the schedule for completing all the frames? And is it all the LGW 744s, or just the Nova ones?

I believe its going at the end of this year once all the reconfigurations have been completed.

The rate is approx 1 per month for the refits.

Which would make sense as now G-VROM is back, VS would have an extra 747 at LGW/MAN/GLA once the refits are completed.

There is also the new A330 (3rd for VS) G-VRAY "Miss Sunshine" to arrive sometime in April with the New Upper Class Cabin, I would imagine this frame will go to LHR as will be configered with all 3 classes of cabn.

Virgin's 747-400 aircraft to be re-fitted:

G-VROM
G-VROS
G-VROY
G-VLIP
G-VGAL

G-VTOP was originally a LHR frame anyway, it was converted to LGW / MAN / GLA config some years ago.

G-VRAY has already been to LHR. Looks great in the candy apple red paint!

Quoting skipness1E (Reply 17):

Probably not for a while. The other 5 new frames get delivered first, then the 2 from china return, followed by the Ryan aircraft, all by the end of the year. If G-VTOP does end up leaving the fleet the leisure program can't be covered without the 2 A330s.

I'm wondering the same thing... Perhaps they may choose to keep them int he leisure fleet to open new routes that cant be done with the 747 or we may see a LHR747 come down permanently to LGW when the 330's move up the road.

Maiden flight is 21st April on the VS3 returning on the VS4 the same day.

Future A330 deliveries will allow for Dehli (June) and Chicago (Sept) and Mumbai (Oct) to go to A330 too.

Plus the fact they will need to be refitted before they move to LHR as they don't have an Upper Class cabin at the moment.

G-VROM, G-VROS, G-VROY, G-VLIP, G-VGAL are all 747-443 versions orginially ordered by AZ, so they have a completey different IFE system on them.. I'm unsure of the order of the re-fit apart from G-VROM is first obviously!

As mentioned above G-VTOP, G-VAST and G-VXLG were all orginally LHR fleet but transferred over to LGW/MAN.

Do you know if they are going to standardise the 747's during the re-fit ?

i.e. are the 744's that came from LHR namely G-VAST G-VXLG going to have the extra part of the galley at the 2 doors and the extra toilet at the R2 door and the FSM's office at the L2 door ??

Lease rates of out-of-production Quads have declined a lot in recent years, but the lease rates of a 8- or 9-year old 744 (the age of many of VS 744s are) should of cause be considerably lower than back when they were new. Bad for the lessors (which certainly will still make some money), but good for operators and 747 fans, as many 744s will likely fly some years longer due to lower fix costs.

Ah brilliant - will be much better for passengers when looking at the seat maps and pre-booking seats on-line.

Also better for crew - as we won't have to learn 2 different location diagrams for equipment during training lol

Shame about the FSM office, was a nice touch for the FSM to have an office. It was also where the IFE controls were.

Rumor has it that the upper deck will be split with PE at the front and economy at the rear, not unlike the LHR config. The small economy cabin behind PE on the main deck will be where the extra PE seats that were on the upper deck will be located. There won't be any new UC suites installed - just a deep clean of the existing ones.

Although this is only rumour until the first one gets back and a seat map posted.

In fact the toilet at door 2R will be installed on G-VAST and G-VXLG to match the others. B zone will be all W class so all the refits will have a dedicated W toilet. The rear of the upper deck will be W.

I am so glad that all of B Zone & the upper deck will all be Premium Economy and have dedicated toilets etc..

The pax's in the W cabin on the main deck on the LGW fleet were always, I feel a poor relation; they didn't have dedicated cabin crew as the upper deck did and didn't have dedicated toilet facilities.

It will be a nice flow of pax cabins aswell, i.e. coming down the stair case from the W cabin upper deck, will lead into the main deck W cabin.

VIR744, will the galley at the 2 doors be a double galley like the current LGW fleet, e.g one at the doors and the one under the stairs ? Or are they going to make them like the galley on G-VAST & G-VXLG ?

Shame .... would be really nice for Premium Economy passengers to have that privacy of Zone B & Upper Deck.

I have never understood Economy on the Upper Deck, same with the LHR fleet of 744's, to me being on the Upper Deck should be a privilidge of being in and paying for either Premium Economy or Upper Class.

I think having a mix like that of cabins is really messy & confusing for passengers when looking at the layout of an aircraft.

For instance the LHR 744's, would be nicer & more logical to have Upper Class in Zones A & B (with bar) and on the Upper Deck, Premium Economy in Zone C and then Economy in Zones D & E. Then it would flow naturally through the aircraft and each cabin class would have their own private cabins with dedicated gallies, toilets, cabin crew etc...

Its a question of economics. The LHR B744's were originally (re)fitted with an all J class Upper deck. They were reconfigured a couple of years ago as the demand at the time did not justify it.

There is an acknowledgement that any kind of split upper deck (particularly involving economy seating) is not ideal. However, if it the best way to maximise revenue then the pros outweigh the cons.

In the case of the LGW B744s, premium on the entire upper deck and in B zone would be too much capacity - likely around 86 seats. In addition you would lose @33 economy seats.

The result would be that you may end up overselling economy and having to upgrade customers into empty premium seats .

The current plan for 66 Premium seats seems about right. An increase of 8 seats will be beneficial, and results in minimla loss of economy seatins

GLA / MAN are options as well as LGW...any advice appreciated!

Checking the VS website for prices...most flights are showing A343 as equipment...as an example, VS15 on 31st Oct, VS16 on 16th Nov. Or VS27 on 7th Oct, and VS28 on 21st Oct.

I'm looking to use Miles, which restricts the flights I can see, and those flights available seem to be A343...however, I've also looked at buying straight, and that opens up additional days, where the 744s seem to be running.

Checking the VS website for prices...most flights are showing A343 as equipment...as an example, VS15 on 31st Oct, VS16 on 16th Nov. Or VS27 on 7th Oct, and VS28 on 21st Oct.

I just checked those dates on www.virginatlantic.com (using miles) and they all show as B744. They definately won't be on A343. The B744 should all be complete by the end of October so your chances are very good.
