4 KLM Boeing B737-406 For Sale

Wed Apr 04, 2012 11:10 pm

The classified in Flight International reports that KLM has 4 B737-400 for sale.

Year of manufacture 1991 to 1994.

CFM56-3C1 engines
147 seats
MTOW 138,500 lb upgradeable to 143,500 lbs.

http://www.airfleets.net/flottecie/KLM-stored-b737.htm

No prizes for guessing the planes involved.

Question is who is in the market for 20 year old B737-400's.

Hopefully they will not turn up at Kemble, like PH-BDA, PH-BDC and PH-BDD, which arrived in 2009, and were scrapped in late 2010.

There is no secret here, as these aircraft have been offered on Boeings website since autumn 2011. http://active.boeing.com/commercial/...ex.cfm?content=include/reports.cfm

They are specifically advertised as 'Comments: EASA compliant aircraft that has been flown by KLM since new.'

A well-used 737 from 1991? 50% chance the next stop is the scrapyard as it will be high up in cycles. A 1994-sample will almost certainly fly again, as its a 734, not a 735.

I remember flying these planes AMS-LHR-AMS back in the late 90's early 00's. They were comfortable in J but not in Y, I liked taking the 767's when they scheduled them to LHR, which was at least once a day during that same time frame. Seats seemed to have better legroom and better pitch, maybe it was just me or the fact they were 767's that flew TATL as well, once ours was the outbound AMS-MEM after we came in from LHR.
Next Flights: PDX-HNL-OGG-LIH-PDX On AS, WP & HA

Nobody. They're so cheap (~$2 million) that they're worth more in parts.

Good question. As I am not a big fan of these planes and with some used B737-700/800s (Easyjet/Ryanair e.g.) on the market, I doubt that there will be an airline that will actually buy these old aircraft.

Maybe some cargo airline will be willing grab these birds and pay them a cargo conversion.

I thought KL had eliminated their dedicated 5-abreast (2-3) business class seats from their 737s by the late '90s, in which case the J and Y seats would have been identical. Only difference (which continues today on their 737NGs) was that the seat pitch in the forward part of the cabin (ahead of the overwing exits) was/is about 2 inches greater than in the rear.

I flew on a few KL 734s (and 733s) last year, shortly before they were removed from service. As always with any KL aircraft, they were in excellent condition and the interiors were spotless and looked like new.

You made me think, the J I was thinking of was BD not KL, The Y I was thinking of KL.

In 2005 KLM's 737 NG's still had a 2-3 layout in Business Class, I flew quite some flights on them in front during that year.
From 2006 iirc, the cabins became all 3-3 layout with same seating in all classes.

Looking at the fate of the other 737 Classics that left KLM service last year, quite some have found a new home.

1990-built PH-BDU -400 went to Buraq in 2009. (it's unsure if it's flying, following the Lybian unrest)
1990-built PH-BDY -400 went to Global Jet in 2010 and is actively flying
1991-built PH-BDZ -400 went to Nok Air in 2011 and is actively flying
1992-built PH-BTD and 1993-built PH-BTE (both -300s) are now flown by Privatair for ECAir (Congo)

The aircraft phased out in the last 2 years that were built in the 1980s all seem to be scrapped or are headed for scrap, though.

I was referring to the fixed (non-convertible) 2-3 business class seats that once existed on the 737-300s and -400s. I'm quite certain no KL 737NGs ever had those seats.

With their somewhat recent acquisition of the 737-800, I doubt they will be jumping on this sale unfortunately.

It was my first thought too, as they recently added four early built 738s to their fleet (1998-2000 built).

However, they also added some classics very recently, including G-GDFH, a 1993-built 737-300, previously operated by KM and DY. In 2011, they added G-GDFE, a 1988-built 733QC. Also, in 2012, they added two younger 733s.

However, all these aircraft are 733s and can therefore be swapped easily. A 734 would be a new type and therefore less likely.

Joost

www.airfleets.net records ex PH-BDU as 5A-MAB.

It says that it was stored 9/2011 to 11/2011.

I can confirm that it was at LH Technik in Malta in September 2011.
