Carrying A Guitar As Hand Luggage In The UK?

Sun Apr 08, 2012 2:01 pm

I have seen it done in the USA where you could put your guitar in the overhead locker, is this possible in the UK/Europe?

I think you would have to purchase an extra seat for the guitar and rest it on the floor/against the empty seat. I'm pretty sure that's the policy with Ryanair.... I'm not so sure about other airlines..

At BA we allow them onboard and simply stow them in a closet for the flight.

I've been told I could carry my guitars into the cabin on BMI, but obviously only if it's in a soft gig-bag. Since I use flight cases, mine go in the hold. I wouldn't trust any of my guitars in the overhead bin with other people putting stuff in and out.

You'll have more luck with BA/BD than with U2/FR etc. The latter's very consistent (aka inflexible) hand luggage policies mean you'll inevitably end up having to check it in or buy a new seat.

Worth checking with the airline directly before you fly.

Depends on the airline, but you will find that they will allow them on widebody flights, but often with narrowbodied planes you would have to check them in due to locker space.

General rule for the airlines I have worked for (airlines which onlly have widebody fleets...) is that guitars in soft case are ok, but if its a hard case you have to check it in.
