Did N836AW Enter Service In America West Colours?

Mon Apr 09, 2012 1:54 am

The database shows it delivered in America West colours at Hamburg but all in service shots are in US Airways colours. Was she repainted immediately on delivery or did she enter service for a few months as HP?

So what was the first Airbus delivered from the HP order in US Airways colours?

Well three months later it was the first A319 to be painted in the new US Airways livery. That was a waste of a brand new HP paint job even if the merger had already happened. Poor planning by somebody at Airbus!

Strange that it was painted in HP colors to begin with, the picture from Hamburg was taken 2 months after the new livery had been introduced and a month after the merge had closed.

Seems N837AW followed in America West befre becoming Arizona Cardinal and last but not least N838AW which was delivered in full HP colours and titles only to swap titles to become a retrojet.
I think then N839AW was one of only two to be delivered as US.

Airbus paints the planes to customer specifications. Planning by Airbus had nothing to do with it.

Is there a huge penalty to changing your livery on an order that is already nearing fulfillment? I can't imagine that changing a livery constitutes a major alteration to an order.

I believe it is often cheaper to take delivery of the aircraft in the scheme agreed to months prior, and have a 3rd party company paint it a few months later again - rather than pay Airbus to change it themselves.
