Delta Song At Dulles Questions

Mon Apr 09, 2012 2:26 am

Did Delta Song only operate three flights to MCO from IAD? That's what I seem to recall. My question: At that point was Delta already in the permanent mid-field concourse (B) or were they still operating from C/D? They used to operate from C/D I believe?

I am almost positive it was only 3 a day. They were rumors of operating Song also to IAD-LAS , but it never developed. This was when they used B42, B44 and B46. Delta has used the B terminal since it was built as a terminal and not just a hardstand. They used to use the C and D in the early 80's and only then it was the hardstand part near the current D1 gates .

What gates are these today with the recent re-numbering?

Interesting...So passengers would take mobile lounges from the main terminal even though the plane was at a hardstand near C/D. They never used gates at C/D?

Pretty sure it operated for a few months from late 2003 to early 2004. I might be wrong though.

B42,B44,B46 got converted from 3 narrow body gates to 2 widebody gates and are now B38 AND B42 which BA and SK share. Delta used the main terminal Mobile Lounge gates to board and send the passengers right to the airplane. This is when Delta had taken over the old Pan Am FRA hub and had the L1011'S run that route. UA,TW,AA,BA used C and D, but the part that DL used had no jetways. They also boarded there domestic flights as well. Delta was one of the last airlines to stop all the main terminal lounge boarding. They were using the hardstand area that is now B65-B79 after leaving C and D area. I can't remember the exact timeline of moving to the B hardstand, but it switched by the mid 80,s

Song IAD-MCO was a great service while it lasted. I remember making a day trip to Universal Studios by taking the 7am down to MCO, renting a car, spending most of the day at the park, then drive back to catch the 9pm back to IAD.

DL was at the C/D hardstand until about 1993ish. That is where the current D1/D3 gates are now. They stayed on the Bravo ramp until the B concourse opened. As a side note, DLX flights parked at the old gate A8 which was at the base of the tower.

Thats right, thanks, I meant to type mid 90's. I remember those Embraer EMB-120 Brasilia prop's painted in Comair colors that went to CVG parked right by the base of the tower.

How long did Delta operate L-1011s on IAD-FRA for? This is news to me!

Yup. Seems crazy that AA and BA were there until just recently. What other airlines besides the ones you listed used actual gates at C/D? Northwest for sure.

Interesting. So just to clarify, please correct me if I am wrong: Delta never operated from actual gates until 1998. They operated from harstands near C/D until about 1993, and then moved to hardstands near B, and then moved into B in 1998 (and then into the new part of B where they currently are in 2008).

Not sure how long the L1011'S ran the route. I don't think it was long since it was just Delta taking over the FRA hub that Pan Am had. I remember in the early 90's they had 2 of them on the B hardstand. One would come in from FRA then go to JFK, the second would come down from JFK and then go accross the pond to FRA. You could buy a domestic ticket IAD-JFK on a L1011. Valujet, Carnival air lines and Continental also used the D. Then you also have Pan Am and Presidential airways in the C. The C and D had originaly all the planes parked parallel to the terminal and had Mobile Lounges board and deplane each flight. There were no passenger facilities out in the terminals, just support space and vehicles. There were other airlines in the 60's and 70's out there as well. The Delta hardstand timeline is correct.

Gosh it's so hard to even imagine this today....

Interesting. So passengers had to take the mobile lounges from the terminal to C/D, and then another one to the aircraft? When were the gates there built?!

The temporary concourse C/D was built in 1983...no?

The C and D was built around 1983, I was mentioning the area that is now C and D. The main terminal had departure gates and waiting areas by the Mobile Lounge docks and the gate agent would take your boarding pass as you go onto the lounge to go right to the plane. The lounges could hold 100 passengers each. The main terminal docks had those old overhead departure boards with the airline names and destinations already on signs, it would make flapping noises as it scrolled to change to the next flight!
