Transaero Airlines Orders 4 787-800's

Mon Apr 09, 2012 1:23 pm

MOSCOW, April 9, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) and Transaero Airlines of Russia recently signed an order for four 787-8 Dreamliners. The signing ceremony for the order, valued at $744 million at list prices, made history by being held onboard the 787 during a demonstration flight for Transaero's executives, employees and special guests.

"Our history with Boeing goes back to 1993 when Transaero became the first airline in Russia to fly with Boeing aircraft," said Transaero Airlines Chairman of the Board of Directors Alexander Pleshakov. "Following our innovative approach and our continuous efforts to enhance our product quality, we have chosen the state-of-the-art, highly-efficient Boeing 787 Dreamliner. It is very symbolic that our airline became a participant of the first order announcement ceremony conducted in the air on board the 787. Boeing 787s will perform flights on both Transaero's domestic and international routes."

Captain Evgeny Nikitin, Commander of Transaero's 767/777 flying unit, was co-piloting the 787 during the entire flight from takeoff to landing as the signing ceremony took place.

Made primarily from composite materials, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner is the first mid-size airplane capable of flying long-range routes and will allow airlines to open new, non-stop routes preferred by the traveling public. As a result of innovative technologies, the airplane offers unparalleled operating economics, fuel efficiency and passenger comfort. More than 850 787s are on order by 59 customers, a testament to the airplane's unique capabilities. Russia played an important role in creating this revolutionary airplane. Engineers from the Moscow Boeing Design Center participated in designing a number of key sections of the 787. Russian manufacturer VSMPO-AVISMA supplies titanium parts for the 787 Dreamliner.

"Boeing and Transaero enjoy an almost two-decades-long partnership and we are opening a great new chapter together with the 787 Dreamliner," said Marty Bentrott, vice president of Sales for Middle East, Russia and Central Asia, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "We look forward to working with Transaero to offer the airline's passengers the unprecedented comfort of the 787 Dreamliner and our continued partnership with this great airline."

Transaero was the first private airline in Russia established in 1991. Transaero also was the first Russian airline to introduce a Boeing airplane to its fleet. In 1993 Transaero started operating its 737. Today Transaero is the second largest airline in Russia operating the 737, 747, 767 and 777 Boeing airplanes.

767 replacements I suppose. Some of the 767s are the oldest fleetmembers now that the 742s have been stored.

Lets hope they firm up the 748I and A380 orders soon!

they'll look good with that blue belly.
Engines are unknown yet, and it remains to be seen how they'll paint them.

Well, they've ordered or operate everything else, so this is almost inevitable.

They can be painted. Boeing recomend a boring grey paint which has specific laminar flow properties, so as not to induce drag.

What is up with Transaero ordering every single new widebody jet out there?

What do they have on order now? I know there is a bunch of them, and all in orders of 4 IIRC.

But still, congrats to Boeing and Transaero.

UN definitely has an affinity for Boeing. Congratulations to them on the order. Does anyone know what routes these may be employed on?

Great News! The 787 will look brilliant in the Transaero livery. The airline is growing at quite a rate. I'm guessing these 787's will replace the current 767 aircraft in the fleet.

these four are probably just cancelled orders that Boeing tried to repatriate with another (loyal) company. Transaero probably got them for a healthy discount per frame too.

Of course not, hence I stated it speculatively rather than categorically and factually.

However it is known that there are a number of airlines which have cancelled/deferred 787 orders and thus left 'windows/gaps' in the production line to be taken up by other airlines, and an order of 4 could easily fill some of these 'windows'.

That also is totally speculative.. because so much of this plane is common with few customer preferences in the basic unit other than engines, there are no windows and gaps..

Which is also the case for the A350 and A380, but we won't mention those, right?

While in this specific instance, it's speculative, this sort of thing does happen ALL the time, whether or not the aircraft is brand new or not.

Confirmed as in a finalized order? No.
For Transaero both A-388 and B-748i are MoU's, as Polot said above.

Why would we be? we are talking only specifically about the 4 787s ordered. The other types are irrelevant to this post...

The production slots that have been freed up by cancellations will result in other airlines that already ordered 787s moving up in the 'firing order'. No need for Boeing to go shopping with bargain prices or special discounts to get an order for 787s no matter what. It's not like Boeing will produce any white tailed 787s this decade....
