SJC Sports Terminal?

Tue Apr 10, 2012 8:44 pm

As an idea to help build revenue, an idea was tossed to the folks at SJC to build a Sports Terminal on the west side of the airport.

I think it's a good idea, build a small one-jetway building to enhance security processing and privacy. In theory, it could be used by all Sports teams visiting the Bay Area. SJC sees charters 49er's, Stanford, Sharks, SJSU, Santa Clara University.

Now everyone, say it quickly three times - "San Jose International Sports-Port"

That is an interesting idea, as typically when home teams fly into/out of their home airport, they take team buses either from the arena or the team's training facility. But at the same time, if players were left on their own to make the team charter, some would inevitably be late for the charter flight and either delays the departure of the team or the team leaves without them.

Now they could also offer this facility to charter flights like those when a major musical act is on tour and has chartered an airliner to fly them between cities or those who are using converted airliners for private a/c as a way for them to board/disembark their a/c without having to get in the elements.

Saints and Hornets drive their own cars to and from the airport FBO here at MSY and I'm sure they love that a lot better than taking buses and haven't heard of any player being late and/or missing the plane.

Sounds like a great idea for SJC.

Of course for the Saints the airport is a not that far of a drive away for them. (I've not been to NOLA since before the Hornets relocated there, so I don't know where they practice at.) Here in Atlanta, the Falcons' practice facility is on the other side of town from ATL (and has been that way for years, as the previous site is a couple of exits south of the current facility) and the nearest airports to Flowery Branch are not capable of (or allowed to) handle the sort of commercial a/c they would use for a team charter. Even the Braves use buses to get to ATL even though it's a short drive away as do the Hawks and previously the Thrashers. For a number of years, the UGA football team (as well as most opponents coming to play them) would fly out of ATL and take buses to and from ATL to Athens. Now these teams are more likely to charter flights directly into AHN and use a/c of a regional carrier like ExpressJet.as opposed to mainline a/c.

The Sharks park their own vehicles at the airport...not sure about the other teams. College teams don't though.

On a side note, GO SHARKS.

Sounds like a pretty cool idea, but how about a nice spot for us spotters and the likes for kids on a small plot on the west side of the airport. Sort of like what they have at RDU. That would be really cool, but I am sure it's the last thing on the airports' mind.

Don't you mean the Norman Y. Mineta San Jose Silicon Valley International Sportsport?

It's a shame SJC does not see anything too substantial nowadays. Every so often it's nice to catch a Ryan International A330, 8C DC8, FX A300 or FX DC-10 coming in.

It would be a good idea to have a dedicated charter ramp at SJC. In addition to sports charters, SJC also sees a fair amount of military charter operations.

The now-closed lot where this facility would be built offered great views of departing jets in phenomenal afternoon light.

I could see building a Peets coffee or something on the corner of Coleman/Airport where SJSU used to be in the parking lot. Revenue potential, and a place to watch planes. Win Win.
