Garuda, Best International Airline In Australia

Sat Apr 14, 2012 3:08 pm

I just read article below which mentioned that Garuda Indonesia is named the best international airline in Australia for 2 months in a row (Jan & Feb 2012), while Virgin Australia is named the best domestic airline in Australia.

The Customer Satisfaction survey conducted by research company Roy Morgan, ranked Garuda Indonesia ahead of Singapore Airlines, Air New Zealand, Emirates and Cathay Pacific (Rank 2 to 5), While For domestic, Virgin Australia is ahead of Qantaslink, Qantas (domestic), Jet Star, and Tiger.

congratulation for both !. Especially for Garuda, as their transformation program has paid off....

I hope Garuda finds themselves back in the US someday. I remember their DC-10 service from LAX to HNL, Biak and Denpasar. Never flew on them, but I have some great night shots of them at LAX.

Absolutely. GA exceeded my expectations on a short CGK-SIN flight in late 2011. Tasty hot meal, PTVs on a 737 - very impressive. I will definitely consider GA for a long-haul trip in the future.

Here's a report:

I must admit they have improved but horror stories with their landings at PER are still keeping me from flying with them...

Interesting. Garuda still has a bad reputation with a lot of people in Australia for it's once-poor safety record. I've noticed people with no knowledge of the airline industry usually quote Garuda and Aeroflot as the most "unsafe"

If my memory serves me well GA once upon a time was EU blacklisted...

Congratulation GA job well done and VA...

Curious why QF haven't considered a joint venture with GA...

Not many airlines GA's size have written off 16 jets in accidents, and that's not counting propeller types.

GA was included in the EU blacklist (along with all other Indonesian airlines) from whenever it was imposed until July 2009 when the ban was lifted for GA and a couple of other carriers.

Looks like sky team finally picked a quality airline to serve their needs for connections between Europe-Asia and Australia. With the A330 and 773ER entering the fleet soon they will be able to add more Asian and long haul European destinations to connect Australia, much like SQ and EK are doing right now.

KE had safety issues too about a decade ago and we looked at them the same way as we look at GA now and look at where they are today. With the right management in place and a good mx program GA can be the next KE.

I recommend you read my previous posts prior to an attack... I was matter of fact congratulating GA on the job well done...

According to http://ec.europa.eu/transport/air-ban/list_en.htm they are no longer baned from EU airspace.

Impressive development! Hope the best for the hard working people who seem to have done a good job.

There haven't been all that many, although any is too many.

I could only find just three instances in the ATSB online database. In the 2010 instance poor runway markings during surface works, and in the 1988 event the lack of a precision approach aid such as ILS for Runway 03 and runway approach lighting not being installed were believed to have contributed to the incidents. For details, see:

Runway incursion - PK-GMG, Perth Aerodrome WA, 24 February 2010;
http://www.atsb.gov.au/publications/...reports/2010/aair/ao-2010-011.aspx

Operational non-compliance, Perth Airport, WA, 9 May 2008, PK-GEF, Boeing Company 737-8CX;
http://www.atsb.gov.au/publications/...reports/2008/aair/ao-2008-033.aspx

Approach up to 1km east of runaway. OvershootAirbus Industries A300, PK-GAI, Perth WA, 16 June 1988 - the famous "Horrie Miller Drive Approach".
http://www.atsb.gov.au/publications/...ports/1988/aair/aair198800221.aspx

But it is good to see that GA has improved in many people's eyes and thios has been reflected in some of the trip reports we are seeing posted. There is still some way to go as the standards are a bit uneven.

A Friend of mine I work with just recently went to Bali, and she went with GA I asked her what she thought of them and she told me they were great infact she reacons it was a better service than when she flew CX to London 2 years ago. So it looks like they are realy improved in big ways which is great well done GA.

A few recent trip reports in the respective section on this site confirm this, they really upped their game. While service and comfort doesn't really tell you anything about safety, it really seems their turn around is being successful.

They indeed already serve AMS four times a week, still with a stopover in DXB, hopefully when they get the 777 they will fly non-stop. They are also looking into a LHR service.

I flew on the DC10 in 1991 on this route. The landing in Biak is really neat and while the plane was being refueled on the flight to Bali, the locals entertained us in the terminal with native dancing etc. I have a custom model of the same jet sitting in my home office here, Visit Indonesia Year 1991 markings and all.

Flew that route in 1993 (on the B742) and also distinctly remember the native dancing as we disembarked the aircraft via the stairs. Good times!

Hi Wedjetail 737,

If i am not mistaken, GA will fly to LAX again but not in near future, it will be by 2014 only....my guess they will fly to LAX through Tokyo using their 777. I hope they will install economy premium though for long hauls flight, in line with other Sky Team members strategy like KLM, Delta....

Cheers

I think GA have a poor business case for the NRT to LAX route. Too many airlines already offer the ability to fly to CGK from the USA, and the trans pacific route is very competitive with low yields. GA basically has no way to feed pax into NRT or LAX.

I think this go the similar way of the TG flights, I see them pulling out of North America also.
