UA To CAI - When, If?

Sun Apr 15, 2012 7:12 am

Before the merger with UA, CO planned on starting EWR-CAI service using 777s. This was delayed, indefinitely it seems, due to turmoil in Egypt and the "Arab Spring".

Yet UA continues to show Cairo as a future destination on their route maps online and in their inflight Hemispheres Magazine. UA must think CAI matters, but when will they be able to make it happen?

IIRC, Egypt Air, a member of *A, was ramping up its CAI hub with a new terminal to make connections easier and provide a rival to EK at DXB. Was the terminal built?

Egypt Air making CAI a viable connection point to Arabia, E. Africa, India, etc., would be crucial to making EWR-CAI service worthwhile.

Will UA use 763s, 777s, or 787s on the route?

I doubt it will happen anytime soon...is the MS CAI-JFK flight still daily? DL used to have a well-performing flight which they cancelled at the start of the revolution.

Additionally, has MS parked a few of the longhaul planes? I was in CAI this past February and noticed a few siting there all packaged up.

I doubt UA wants to take their crews into CAI for overnights with things still unsettled. I doubt there would be a great demand either, especially if this route was daily, then UA would need to dedicate 2 frames to this route. I expect if Egypt settles down and they have enough 787's we may see this routes years down the road. For now best way UA fliers can get to CAI is a connection in Frankfurt.

This route is well-served by a codeshare.

I doubt crew safety is an issue. Otherwise no airlines would be flying to CAI.

CO/UA has moved to greener pastures and better opportunities.

It may return eventually, but that could be anytime in the future.

Why not persuade MS to move their JFK flight to EWR?

Plenty of airline crew currently stay in Cairo after flying in plane loads of tourists who are also staying in Cairo.

Dont hold your breath for United. The market has fallen apart.

Tourism plunged in 2011, while foreign investment fell to mere quarter of its historic levels. There are lots of uncertaintity plauging the country, which puts a damper on air travel demand.

Delta dropped its Cairo service and has not returned. I just also read that KLM cut back its CAI services to merely 3x weekly, which is rather bleak sign.

Yes a terminal 3 opened in 2009, but since last summer MS has significantly reduced its own flying as well and refocused more back on local O&D traffic as dreams of a hub and passenger willingness to transit CAI has diminished.

Anyhow CAI was never going be another DXB even under the most rosy scenarios.

Much of those connections can be made by other Star partners, not the least THY.

Knowing behind the scene actions at Star, I was never quite sure why MS joined, especially as it has some friction with existing members, and conflicting spheres of influence.

Tourism to Egypt is very weak and will take a long time to recover, especially with the political situation still uncertain.

Thanks, all, for your replies.

I appears that EWR-CAI is unlikely in the near future. However, it is interesting that UA still has that red line connecting Newark and Cairo on their route maps. Just to impress people? It seems a little disingenuous.

Yes, TK and IST could do gangbusters when that is in effect. According to UA's press release of 21 Feb, EWR-IST service commences on 1 July with 763s.
