CO First To Fly Newark-London Stansted

Wed Oct 11, 2000 2:02 pm

Yesterday Continental Airlines announced it will begin flying a daily nonstop between its hub at Newark and London Stansted. It will begin on May 3rd 2000 pending government approval. It will fly a Boeing 757-200 on the route, and will be the only US carrier to serve the Northern London airport from the US. How do you think this places Continental as a trans-atlantic airline?

I think El Al used to serve that route as well, didn´t they? With a 757, too.

I think it is strange that not more airlines fly in to London Stansted (STN), as it is by far the most modern and spacious of London's airports. I guess it is runway capacity as STN is a single runway airport, but the terminal is great!

I will arrive STN from Norway tomorrow, looking forward to that!

Gatwick uses one runway (the other is a taxiway). Look how big and busy that place is. Maybe Stansted could become another Gatwick for London?

I think it is a great move because it is a much more central airport. I live in the middle of England and it takes 1 hour to Stansted and 2 1/2 to Gatwick. I think they may have to use the 777 after a while because it will be so busy!

AA used to serve stansted from chicago but they were forced to stop services because the neighbors of the airport cryed like babys about the noise generated by the big plane (i know it was a wide body plane but i was too young to know exactly what plan it was).

also, i think the load factors werent that high either. we used to fly to stansted instead of london because they had the cheaper ticket and the airport was a couple hours closer to our house in norfolk then gatwick and especially lhr

AA operated 762's on the route. The noise issue didn't force them out though. STN then was dead, going back to 1996 I can remember for two hours in the early afternoon some days there were no movements at all. Today things are very different. There have been noisy protests made in certain quarters lead by one Mr Mead, I shall not tell you about my personal experiences of him though.

The new CO route has got good media coverage, including a nearly half page story near the frontof the Financial Times. Analysts seem to think about 8 routes to the US are sustainable out if STN in the current climate. STN is growing by about 25% a year and with people like Bill Gates pumping in huge money to the surrounds, $200 million announced today, doesn't look like that'll be slowing anytime soon.
