DL Emergency Landing At DUB

Mon Apr 16, 2012 4:17 pm

Very few details at the moment but it appears as though a JFK-IST flight made an emergency landing at DUB. It says Irish police are on the scene and passengers remain on board. What this could be? I doubt its a medical emergency because then paramedics would be on board as well.. Any one with more details?

They're reportedly back off the blocks and en route to JFK again. 1:42 on the ground.

If a suspicious device is found on board, shouldn't the procedure be to evacuate/deplane and contain the passengers in an isolated holding area rather than holding them on the plane and possibly putting them in danger of this device exploding?

How did he or she manage that, that is unfortunate.

Good decision to take it very seriously though, in my opinion.

It's time to start using some common sense combined with risk analysis. As a Captain, if I had been informed of a cell phone recharging in a lav, I would have made a p.a. to have someone identify it. If no one identifies it, then perahps a diversion would be considered. My two cents.

HA! I think this is the moral of the story: it costs less for the airline to have in-seat adaptors as opposed to making an emergency landing

Aren't plugs part of the DL B767 interior mods?

Looking at the seniority of the F/A's it could be that this was the first time they have seen a
Cell phone up close.

I agree. Too many freaking toyz. I do not have a cell phone, Ipad, G4 or whatever it is, etc... But how in Sam Hill can you enjoy a flight in what has become flying cattle cars? Ever sit in the middle seat of a 737 during a four hour flight?! I have and Southwest had to get a wheel chair for me to deplane. Personally I have not enjoyed a flight since 1983 when I flew AA first class Dallas to Honolulu and back. I may reconsider when I buy a new Gulfstream V!

It does? Retrofitting the entire fleet with power outlets is cheaper than making one diversion to Dublin? Wow, that's a bargain....

Who knew it was so cheap?

American oversensitivities strike again!

Next time I fly, I had better not leave my toothbrush in the toilet otherwise there will be hell to pay.

Hey guys I was on board DL 73 yesterday, and it was interesting to say the least. I was in J, taking a nap when I realized the commotion and they announced it was for a " medical emergency". I take the DL 72-73 a lot and had medical diversions before I knew this wasn't one. The purser who was annoying me from the get go(whole other story) was freaking out, one of the younger FA's who is on this flight a lot handled the situation much better than the rest of the uber senior crew. Right after we landed it was obvious that this was no medical emergency. We taxiied to a remote location met with security, only then the younger FA announced that they had to say medical emergency due to " sensitivty" of the issue, and explained everything inculing the fact that the diversion was due to cell phone found in the lav.
The passengers were very calm till the purser got on the PA and said " not just any cell phone, its a phone that's tempered with" that made everyone uneasy. As we were given strict instructions not to move from our seats we were wondering if there was such a threat why were not allowed to disembark the aircraft.
I figured later that the purser made the announcement after the owner of the cell phone was found, and it actually belonged to a Iranian girl traveling with a group of 34, she had an old crappy phone that the case was loose so she taped it together. I think DL handled the situation very well especially the young FA who took over the situation from the freaked out Purser.
In the meantime I tweeted that we made an emergency landing and a journalist got in touch with me so here is the article:
http://storify.com/felimmcmahon/phon...-toilet-causes-expensive-diversion
This is my second Dublin diversion on DL 73. My next time I will be staying for a couple nights and have some drinks there.

It seems then all went rather well, Gokmen... Although I personally would object to the actions of the purser, apparently the young FA is much more capable... seniority be damned.

I, too, do wonder, however, about why all the passengers were left onboard... Maybe it was feared that if it indeed was an explosive device, anyone who placed it would evacuate among first and then blow it up?

Im sorry but it really doesnt sound like DL had handled the situation at all well!!!!! The younger FA did however but sounds like she was a lone ranger in this one.

I have soooooo often found mobile phones plugged into the shaver sockets of unoccupied lavs by mindless passengers. On one occasion (rear lav of a 777) I found a plug and wire leading into the bin where the idiot obviously thought it wouldnt be noticed. I have never once felt the need to over react! A simple call to the skipper and a quick unassuming PA along the lines of "If someone has lost their mobile phone please contact a member of the crew" has always found the individual and then the person gets a very dressing down.

Note to you all however, it is very VERY dangerous to plug any personal device into these sockets (apart from shavers - its all they are designed for) and indeed into the plugs you sometimes see by doors which are only there for vacuum cleaners. Why? Well because the domestic current you find in your home or workplace is very different to that found on an aircraft and could easily cause a static charge or over heating which could start a fire even after a short time. If your seat does not have built in power sockets of any sort...do not think you are being clever by using anywhere else on an aircraft!
My views are my own and do not reflect any other person or organisation.

Airlines are going to have to figure out how to get power to every seat if the long term solution to in flight entertainment is "bring your own device and pay for our wifi".

I seriously think if the young FA wasn't on rest the diversion wouldn't have happened. He told me this himself as well, and said safety is first but we could have easily resolved it. He also mentioned they always find cell phones plugged in lav's but the fact that this one had tape on it, made this situation what it is.
