AB Launches Seasonal Flights To Kaliningrad

Thu Apr 19, 2012 6:23 pm

Hi, sorry if this should have posted/discussed before.

On 13 April, Air Berlin announced the launch of BER-KGD during summer season, with (so far only) 3 flights per week. The flight leaves Berlin on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays at 12:40, arriving in Kaliningrad at 15:20 local time. The return flight times are 15:50-16:30.

Thus, AB will be the only Central-Western European airline to serve Kaliningrad. Today (that is to say since KDavia went bust in 2009), Warsaw and Copenhagen are the only other cities with direct airlink to Kaliningrad that have not once been Soviet.

Why have so few routes once served by KDavia been taken over by other airlines? And, why are the KGD flights of AB not year-round? I have not been under the impression that traffic on this route depends on the season?
