Finnair Eyes Closer Ties With JAL And IAG

Thu Apr 19, 2012 8:49 pm

Japanese news agency Nikkei says Oneworld carrier Finnair will build closer ties with both JAL and IAG, to facilitate faster business travel between Japan and Europe.

Nikkei says Finnair and BA is going to have a closer cooperation “in place during this fiscal year”, whereas negotiations for closer ties between Finnair and JAL would also possibly imply a joint venture with JL.

Finnair also recently announced code-share agreement with TP, one of the airlines speculated to be on the shopping list for IAG. Finnair is also dedicated in for cutting costs by setting up a partnership for LCC operations in Europe. Both AB and BT have been reported as possible partners.

I wonder what that will be, though AY getting closer to IAG is not a surprise.

That sounds logical, JAL said earlier they will start 787 service to HEL next spring.

With the JV between Finnair and FlyBe recently started - and IAG [through BA] owning 15% of FlyBe - could IAG investing more in FlyBe and adopting a wider Finnair/FlyBe link be a way of deepning the link - or am I really wishing for too much.

It's possible Finnair/FlyBe link gets deeper, Finnair should tell before the summer if they have found an European partner to feed their long haul flights. Their JV FlyBe Nordic has started well, but hard to say if it's possible to make it a lot bigger.

OT: What does TP bring to OW? Isn't there too much overlap with Iberia?

OneWorld needs better coverage in Eastern Europe. AB doesn't fill the void that MA left.

TAM will take care of that with the TAM-LAN merger.

IB, like BA, only has direct flights to GIG and GRU in Brazil. TP flies to seven additional Brazilian destinations, namely Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, Forteleza, Natal, Porto Alegro, Recife and Salvador. TP would not only provide the only direct oneworld link between these destinatrions and Europe. Geographically its hub at LIS is ideally situated as a transfer point to these cities from all of Europe and, indeed many other points.

Less importantly TP serves several African destinations not served by onworld airlines including Bamako, Bissau, Maputo and Sao Tome . Here their LIS hub is well positioned for transfer passengers flying in from Europe and in this instance North America.

Finally there are five airports on the Portugese holiday Atlantic Islands, the Azores and Madiera. AB and HG link FCL to TXL (currently) and VIE respectively. But I believe these are the only oneworld flights to any of these airports.
