4/19 DL1063 JFK-LAX Bird Strike W/ Engine Failure

Thu Apr 19, 2012 9:40 pm

DL 1063 from JFK to LAX today took a birdstrike on takeoff leading to an engine failure on the right engine. All's well and the flight safely landed back at JFK.

I thought the same thing. Very cool, very calm. Total pro.

Did he stop filming because he thought he broke the plane with his electronics?

No, he stopped so he could call his wife and say goodbye. His words.

He filmed this after getting off of the plane. The guy is some kind of motivational speaker/author. There's something about this guy that grates on me. He seems to like to hear himself speak and seems very proud he can operator a video recorder. He even puts a headline on his own website that says "Grant Cardone: Bestselling Author, Sales Expert, Bird Strike Videographer." See here:

having no experience flying airplanes, listening to the ATC recording made me wonder: How hard is it to make a left turn in a 757 when running on only the left engine? I'm sure it's probably effortless for the pilot, which makes me appreciate the engineering of modern aircraft even more than I already do.

It's because of hours and hours of training in the simulator. It just becomes very routine. Engine out.. start the engine out check list..

Its called adrenaline...happened to me in an MD-80. Engine failure at 31,000 with 3 failed attempts of a restart, gets your blood going.....for a while. Especially stressful when as a passenger, you know what happened but the flight attendend thought we " hit something".

Check out Grant Cardone's interview on the local news station KTLA. So dramatic.

They just covered this event on NBC Nightly News and while showing aerial footage of the 757, they referred to it as a "737"

Sorry to all my US friends but this guy (to me) is stereotypical of the outspoken, uneducated, self absorbing type of person that really winds up the rest of the world. I couldn't even watch half of that video. Sure, a scary moment but as he says he has flown 3 million miles? Why do people like him make any event so personal and 'like OMG' I am so precious and aaarrggghhh. I really, really hope I never have to sit next to somebody like him.

No offense taken.

Just look at how every things in the third person and own videos titled "Business Expert Grant Cardone". Hmm, id have a slightly different word choice.

He's made a living selling rah-rah emotional snake oil to the disillusioned and suceptible masses. He's a parasite, what else can we expect.

He's only a 'business expert' if business is defined as making bullshit taste like honey.

Never heard of this guy until this incident. It's obvious that he is a media whore. He has an opportunity to promote himself and he is taking full advantage of that while he can. He'll fade right back into oblivion as soon as this is over...which is just about now.

This Grant Cardone or whatever his name was also conveniently on the same flight that one of those baldwin guys were removed from. Anyway he had a video of youtube talking about it, I believe I only got thru about 20 seconds of it before I had to stop it. He comes across as being arrogant and cocky.

I have edited together and subtitled some bits of Liveatc recordings from the tower and departure frequencies: what struck me, other than the calm tone of the pilot of 1063, was the workload of ATC at JFK Tower (while 1063 was on the departure frequency). It takes a lot of people and good team work to create a happy ending: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdHfYONgOAA
