LHR Diversions Today?

Fri Apr 20, 2012 1:38 pm

Hi ,

Just noticed that BA777 ARN -LHR has diverted to STN .

Seems to be weather related...anyone got more info? I seemed to have missed completely that London is experiencing weather issues today!

Any other diversions taking place?

Cheers

Weather related?? We have seen a few storms and some heavy rain but I did not think it was enough to see diversions, must have been really heavy over London.

BA don't like to operate in any form of rainy conditions. A speck of rain normally grounds the fleet to a complete halt. It rained for an hour a few years ago and the place fell apart. Remember the empty 747 used for ferrying bags that missed flights due to rain?

Anyway, I'm not sure about London's weather today, but it is April and maybe there was a wind?
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

Well I'm about 70 miles East of LHR and we've had a good day predominantly. All I can think of is that we had a heavy hail storm around 2 hours ago, could that have had an effect?

Just heard the aircraft was struck by lightening causing some kind of instrument malfunction... cant confirm the credibility of the source though but apparently the fire brigade were on standby as they landed at STN ...

Really? Doesn't it rain a LOT in Brittan? (at least from the perspective of somebody who lives in the high mt desert we call Colorado).

Rainfall in London

The number of rainy days (with more than 0.25mm of rainfall) is fairly consistent throughout the year, with between 11 and 15 rainy days every month. Overall rainfall is highest in November and August (64 mm and 59mm respectively) and is lowest in March and April (37mm each).

Nearly every other day.

Seems BA does not fly much then.

We are experiencing some very strange weather recently. Thunder and lightening have been around for a couple of weeks now sporadically which is strange. I'm absolutely petrified of the stuff and I live maybe 2 miles from LHR if that and it's been on and off for a while now.
I believe the aircraft in question was holding for a very long time because of the storm earlier and diverted due to low fuel. That's what I have read anyway.
I hope the weather pisses off soon because I really don't like it!!

Yesterday, Thur 19, BA had 16 aircraft hit by lightning at LHR, and out of action while being inspected.

I was out at Myrtle Avenue near LHR, there was hail about the size of peas falling for a few minutes as aircraft continued to land on runway 27L. Heavy showers were intermitant throughout the day.

Haha... Some people have phobias and I guess that's mine. Its funny because because of this weather recently I've actually become quite a nervous flier. Not cool when you're crew! I mean I'll get over it but I think we have had our fair share now so it can bugger off!

The can you tell mother nature to give me one clear day on my trip to London from the US next week (last week in April) so I can go plane spotting at LHR, because right now every long range forecast shows rain every day from April 26-May 1.

My cousin was supposed to fly back to LHR from MAD on BA last night, the plane was supposed to leave MAD at 19:45 and when we arrived for check-in it was delayed until 23:55, they told us the plane got hit by lightning and was AOG, so the earlier MAD-LHR plane was meant to pick up the stranded PAX and fly back to MAD.

She was offered a hotel and was put on today´s flight at 10:45.

So it hasn't rained since then. Wow! Better book a flight to London for my next sunshine holiday. Who needs the canary islands

The past days have been quite "thundery" as far as I could see from my office (between T5 and T3). We had strong crosswinds, moments of very low visibility, heavy rainshowers and plenty of lightnings: I've been told, for example, that a plane belonging to a Chinese/Taiwanese carrier BA does the maintenance for has been struck by a lightning while landing. Traffic, as far as I could see, was reduced in several occasions during Friday and Thursday. PCA units weren't used for days because of wind.

I was on the ramp on Thursday afternoon and the wind was pretty strong.

Fromn the link provided in Reply 2:

"A storm cell passed over London Heathrow early this afternoon causing long hold times for landing aircraft. During its hold BA777 Stockholm Arlanda - London Heathrow diverted to London Stansted whilst squawking the 7700 Emergency Code. There are suggestions that some instruments were lost possibly due to a lightning strike.
