Aeropueru, The main air carrier of Peru, ceased operations last week. It had a terrible financial crisis. The airline was owned by Mexicana-Aeromexico group with a 60% , Delta Airlines with a 20%, and the rest by a private investor. The company had reported "red numbers" in its balance sheets since the 80s. After a long crisis term, the directors on board decided to close the airline. It was created by the Peruvian government about 40 years ago. Until last week, its fleet was two 757 (belong to Delta), one Fokker F28 and three 727s. They're expecting for someone with a new economic plan and they are thinking about a new financing program in order to correct its huge debts. So far, everything shows it will not be on the skies again!!.

RE: Aero Continente

Aero Continente is a quite large domestic airline that flys in Peru.

Many might not have heard of them due to them not flying International flights, but just a month ago, they started flights to Buenos Aires, Argentina. anyways...

What I read in the papers is that Aero Continente is close on making a deal and taking over (the name too) Aeroperu and helping its finasuial (spelling) depts too.

Hope they buy them and start new and making it a successful Peruvian airline too.

(Can't find a good pic, I have one, but quite far and blurry, and I think you dont want to see a FS98 pic of it either, if you want the computerize pic, just send me a e-mail and I'll send one to you.)

Their fleet are DC-9s (-14), 737-200s, 727-100s, -200s and growing.

The way I understood it is that Aeroperu suspended operations for 60 days while it tries to renegociate their $174 million debt.

While this is not a good thing by any definition, it doesn't neccesairily mean that they will close down permanently. Let's hope they will pull through.

Not a good airline

Hello all,
I was in Peru last week. Aeroperu closing it's wings wasn't a surprise
for me, with all the coruption going on (so, i'm told) there. Aero
Continente is an sub par airline, there are rumors that the reason
they offer such low fares is because they lack in maintanance.
Believe me, I've flown 1)Aeroperu---long time ago 2)Aerocontinente
3)Faucette----remember them and 4)Americana. If I had to fly nationally, i'll
would rather take a bus!! Aero Continente does sound a little
value-jettish for me, but i'm accustomed to flying in American's
A300s and LanChile's new 767s. Let's hope Aero Continente's
expansion is for the good. While leaving LIMA the other night,
I did see AeroPeru's airplanes just sitting there, it seemed sad.
By the way, all my family lives in Peru (minus my immediate
family---mother, father) I travel there almost every year.\

Once I flew to Puira, Peru and the damn paint of the plane(A.C.) was chipping
off!! I also noted how careless the baggage handlers just "threw" the
luggage into the luggage compartment of our B737-200 (no hush
kits, these are the real noise makers!!!) Service, was ok, I suppose.
But, I would never again fly on Aero Continente. I hope the rumors
of the Maintance is false for the sake of others!!!

Aeroperu and its people are feeling the same we felt some years ago when Viasa, our international carrier closed its wings too. We used to offer excellent service in our all destinations. Sadly, the Venezuelan government decided to sell it to Iberia of Spain. Iberia destroyed our company and Aerolineas Argentinas is lucky to still be alive. Iberia sucks!!. They just buy airlines around the world, take some money from them, sell their airplanes and send all of the employers home with no money. Viasa was never recovered. Aeropostal Avensa and Aserca are flying Viasa routes now. Thank to these companies we are being seen in many airports around the globe. I hope Peru can be seen in a short future. Good luck!!
