737 400 Accident In Karachi-Pakistan

Sun Apr 22, 2012 9:27 pm

Only a few days after the big tragedy of Bhoja Air, another 737 of a small local carrier suffered a major problem.
I know, totally different outcome and thank God not comparable, but looking the pictures and the fuel spilled all over the runway, ( the left main gear strut collapsed and penetrated the wing ), the eruption of a big fire could be a real threat here.

I hope the authorities of Pakistan will take note about this small carriers before we see another disaster....

Not a good week for small airlines in Pakistan. Thank God no one was killed and that there was no fire.

Inspections ordered for all aircraft...

I just read the same in other media.
Summary :
"The Pakistani government mandated Sunday that all airplanes operated by private airlines must undergo a new inspection to determine whether they are safe to fly,the planes operated by private airlines will be inspected one by one, and any aircraft that fail will be grounded, Pakistani Defense Minister Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar told state TV. Planes currently in operation will be allowed to fly as they await inspection, he said."

Apparently PIA will not be included in the inspections.

This is the latest crash.

I was puzzled by the MSNBC item.

"It's still unclear what caused the Boeing 737-200 to crash in wheat farms about five kilometers (three miles) from Benazir Bhutto International Airport on Friday evening. It was arriving from the southern city of Karachi".

Is that bad journalism, or was there a third crash.

I am surprised that they continue to fly until inspected.

Well, a fortunate escape for those on board this plane. RIP to those who passed away in the other accident last week.

From looking at the pictures, I would guess that this elderly plane with a pierced wing would be written off.

How on earth does the gear strut fail? Did they slam the plane to the ground, or is this really a technical failure, as the article seemed to imply???

Poorly worded reference to the crash last Friday, not a new incident.

Thats a W/O for sure.

Looks very similar to the Ryanair accident in Rome in 2008 and that was a w/o too, even with a brand new 737-800.

I thought Shaheen was supposed to be one of the better carriers in the region with more trustworthy maintenance practices... is there any truth to that?

The average age of their fleet is way over 20 years old, I read 29 years old IIRC, so I guess they NEED to be trustworthy to keep the aircraft safe

Jokes aside, this accident can be consequence of a hard landing and being more a "piloting" problem than a mechanical one. It will be wonderful if the FDR can show how many G's this aircraft managed in this last landing

Small local carrier? Shaheen Air is one of the bigger carriers in Pakistan...

Incidents like this happen with far too much frequency in Pakistan - in just the past month, 5 incidents have occured where maintenance problems were only discovered during takeoff.

They don't even generate headlines anymore, because it's not such a big deal. The only reason we are hearing about this is the tragic crash.
