Delta Introducing New Safety Video

Tue Apr 24, 2012 11:49 pm

According to insider info from another site, Delta will be introducing a new safety video starring Richard Anderson himself. Deltalina will have a cameo role in this new video.

I will miss Deltalina's finger wag, but hopefully this new video is good. IMO Deltalina should record the new voice for The Plane Train at ATL when Concourse F opens.

Hopefully this one will be a little shorter--I feel like the current video just lags and takes forever.

Also, I hope they cut out the cutesy stuff. If you're gonna incorporate chessy elements like the finger wag and the guy's sparkling tooth, you have to totally commit to the idea, like Air New Zealand's body paint and Richard Simmons videos. Random inserts in an otherwise straightlaced video just come across as odd.

Good. About time. I was tired of that stupid video the third time I saw it. Hopefully, it will be something more neutral sticking to planes and basic safety without making frequent fliers run for ear plugs and eye masks before take off!

I never liked it. I enjoyed the old video as the song was memorable. The new one was a tad cheezy for my taste

The most recent one was extremely popular and generated a ton of good press. Mission accomplished. They all get old after a while. Even the NZ one (which was excellent).
Anderson's current opener is seriously dry. Hopefully he'll be more personable if this is true

I agree. NZ's are obviously rediculous meaning they can get away with it. Also they update them fairly regularly meaning that they don't get too old.

QF's John Travolta safety demonstration, on the other hand, was just downright lame. The into and ending had Travolta, but with a completely straight faced traditional safety video in between. He was just completely out of place. Thankfully it got cut after 6 months since it wasn't even good the first time.

Please please edit it down to a few minutes from the way-too-long, current version. I've had numerous flights where the taxi is slowed down or stopped just to finish the frickin' thing!

I didn't think it was the best idea we could've made. Yes, it was a departure from the conventional, and a novel idea, but how long can you really go on with something like that.

Yeah, it's the old "veteran passing the torch to the all-star draft pick" scenario. Now that she's married, and off the market, they have to find another bit of crumpet to strut across the screen.

I know a few people who went down to audition for it, and I couldn't help but laugh.

Glad I am not the only one who felt that way. It was half way between amusing and annoying the first time I saw it ... and all downhill from there. I actually thought about writing delta about it, but didn't.

Good for them if it got tem press but yes it was annoying. Maybe they should change more often. Although I understand they are probably difficult to make, with lots of safety and regulatory concerns. Another one which is getting very old is their partner AF's one.

Finally.

Hopefully they get rid of that creepy guy with the gold tooth, and the "SMOKIN'S NOT ALLOWED" part. I guess it would be okay if they filled their whole video with humor, but I just can't take them seriously.

My favorite DL video was with the background music that went: duhhhda duhhhda duhhhda duhhhda duhda da da and had this blue background.

It seems all US majors are coming out with a new video this year. UA/AA came out with a new one this Winter, DL this Spring, and US will have a new one this summer.

Thank goodness. The current video is cheesy and too long. The most fun I've had with it is timing the length of it versus other carriers. At one point UA's video was a full minute shorter. Hopefully the new one is professional and to the point.

At first it wasn't that long. What really killed it was the merger and all the extra a/c types, doors/exits and equipment types/locations. If you look at the first vid from when it came out it was much shorter, had better flow and made more "sense." The doors, equipment and differences are spliced in and it feels choppy and awkward.

I agree. I actually really like the current DL video (but it has gotten a bit long in the tooth with all of the splice-ins needed after the merger). No one cares about the airline CEO. Nobody.

It's not about humor: it's about grabbing people's attention, especially since we've learned to tune out the safety videos after decades of horrid, droning preflight blah-blah. The finger wagging introduces a strange motion -- a woman wagging her finger at you on a television monitor is likely to get some of your attention, even if you weren't watching it before. Same thing with the tooth sparkle thing -- that little ding is only heard at that one specific point. The tone is high and somewhat loud. It gets your attention, which is a good thing because the next things said are the most important for takeoff prep: tray tables away, seatbelts on, and finish your drink. It's also an audio clue to the crew that the video is almost over.

I think that in terms of using visual and audio cues to grab attention, this video is probably the best of any U.S. major. Hopefully they can keep it up in the next iteration.

Ugh, I think Richard Anderson's intro on the current video is so douchey...now he's going to be the star of the entire video? I work in corporate America and understand the role highly-paid executives play in a company and that there's also high risk in exchange for the high pay. It's also unlikely Anderson or any CEO will only hold that position for more than a few years--not decades. After cramming oneself into an economy class seat after potentially paying an unwelcome bag fee or barely making a connection because of a late flight, the last thing I'd want to hear is someone talking about C.E. Woolman's big desk that he gets to sit at everyday, etc. To most people, I think it reinvigorates the whole fat cat vs. the little man mentality. What do y'all think?

I don't think we'll see deltalina waiving her finger in her camio appearance.
I Asian cultures, any form of pointing is considered offensive.
I believe this is one reason DL is redoing the video.
Also, awhile back, United which serves many Cities in Asia changed it's live safety demo protocol.
Flight attendants at United no longer point out exits with two fingers. They point them out using their whole hand
instead. Food for thought!

"Deltalina" is actually an EXCELLENT instructor at DL's training center in ATL, in addition to being a primo flight attendant. She bops around the building with her hair in a cute pony tail but having had to stand in front of her for my door and emergency drills, I gotta tella ya--she is TOUGH. No redo's, no nonsense--by the book and totally professional. And she is a very nice woman. And NO, I am not going to tell you her real name! But she is well liked and very respected by all 22,000 DL flight attendants because she is personable, approachable and very, very funny. She has a unique way of taking very serious instructional material and making it interesting and fun, all the while maintaining a totally professional image. We are VERY proud of her.

But like anything, you periodically have to update the safety videos because people tune them out--until that moment comes when they need it. I used to joke on the PA--"This time the information is free. I you need it for real you better approach me with a hundred dollar bill in your hand or follow the back of my head." Just ask the passengers on US that wound up in the Hudson River.

So the next time you fly, if you see people talking over the top of the safety demo quietly ask them to stop. Your lives may depend upon it. Oh yes--as every flight attendant and pilot will tell you they NEVER sit in a passenger seat with their seatbelts unfastened at any time unlesss they are getting up to use the facilities. Those people that bounce off the ceilings are the fools that ignored that little part.

The safety video isn't going to get any shorter. That's all stuff that has to be in there, so you'll have to live with it (pun intended). The bit that doesn't need to be in there is Jeff Anderson's introduction and the ads, and I expect those are only going to increase.

And, if you remember the finger wave and smile (which I don't think were intentional gimicks when they first came out) then you at least were paying attention to part of the video, which is probably better than you remember any other safety videos.

Hm. When I flew Delta to Spain with a group of friends, it would seem Deltalina piqued their interest. On the outbound flight to ATL, almost nobody watched the safety video. From there, to BCN, everybody's eyes were set on the AVOD to see Deltalina. I think that's why she's there.. to draw the pax's attention.

Generally speaking, I've noticed that a lot more people pay attention to Delta's safety video than Alaska's safety demonstration (the only other airline I fly with often).. so it gets it's point sufficiently across. Hopefully the new one won't be boring..

Out of interest, why do flight attendants in North America use two fingers? I've been thinking about it and I am 99% sure that I've never seen a non-American/Canadian flight attendant not use their full hand. It doesn't bother me at all how someone indicates the general direction of an exit, your point just got me wondering...
