EK On China

EK describes China as a "priority market".

Chengdu and Hangzhou are likely EK destinations.

More 380s will be used to China.

These aren't, of course, surprising. Still, it's nice to hear them.

As for Africa, EK states that "many in the aviation community havve ignored Africa at their peril for too long".

No doubt this is why some national European carriers are rushing to serve regional cities in mainland China before the Gulf carriers arrive. I'm thinking here of the new routes being started by AF/KL and LH not forgetting AY.

EK in China will be a slight struggle when facing up to the Euro carriers due to the geographical location of the Middle East versus China - Europe. It is just as close flying PEK-HEL vs PEK-DXB. They can do better though in Western Chinese cities which are closer to the Middle East, but most parts of affluent China are located in the East which are served well by PEK, CAN, PVG and others. EK does well for Middle East, Africa and South America links to China but the combined sum of these markets are still small compared to Europe. Finally, Chinese carriers are fare leaders, in the same way as EK in many markets, so they are eating EK's lunch in some way.

SQ is connecting people between Europe and China every day. Hub location is not all that matter. EK serves many cities in Europe without a direct link to China. Once a connection is required, DXB is no longer at a big disadvantage. Sure, connecting at FRA, CDG, etc is much shorter but not everyone can afford it. But the market for China traffic doesn't begin and end in Europe. There's also Africa-China and S.America-China, those are the 3 fastest growing markets in the World.

Also very important fot EK is traffic from Middle east, Africa and SouthAmerica to China, demand will grow a lot in the future and they are extremely well positioned for that.

I´m sure that EK will grow in Africa and also in South America, traffic will demand more freqs and bigger planes, however the problem in Africa is airports, they are not ready for much bigger planes and more capacity.

Places like Nairobi, Dar es Salaam have a good traffic numbers but they are so close to the limit at peak times that they really need an upgrade in the infrastructures.
