How Is Air Transat Doing?

Thu May 03, 2012 6:35 pm

I have been talking to a couple different Air Transat employees the past couple of months and they seem to think Air Transat might not be around much longer? I thought Air Transat must have been doing well; with the additional A330's and new interiors?

Thoughts?

They had first quarter results worth forgetting. From there to say that TS might not be around, that i don't know.

I hear a pay freeze might be around the corner for the employees.

Definately something TS could see coming, with the likes of WG, WS and Jazz expanding into TS's market share.

One thing that puts them at a disadvange are all those A330's. Too much capacity in wintertime for flights to the Caribbean, making it difficult for them to operate out of secondary cities, a la Sunwing.

They did wet lease one A332 this winter to XL Airways France. And they always lease a few to Garuda Indonesia for the hajj season.

If i were TS management, and could hit the rewind button, i would opf for a 737/757/767 fleet.

37's for the Caribbean routes, 57's and 67's for Europe and high density caribbean routes.

Those 67's can take 350 people in an all cattle class config. Definately TS territory. And the only reason i say Boeing is because Airbus has no real competition against the 757. The 321 cannot cross the pond, so is pretty useless for an airline like TS who needs dual purpose planes.

P.S the new TS interior looks amazing !

This is what I have been told by the couple employees; along with possible layoffs for YVR soon.

Now that Jazz lost the Thomas Cook contract they are no longer much of a threat but WestJet has picked up the Thomas Cook contract; my understadning is that WestJet will not be operating the Thomas Cook Canada B757-200's that Jazz had. Now that Sunwing is operating a B767 during the summer I guess they could be equiped to take on all the lost TS work if needed.

Yes it is! Yet another Canadian airline that has put WestJet to shame regarding inflight entertainment!

3-3-3 in an A330. Looks tight.

only the 200's - the 300's are 2-4-2

Not by a whole lot, but those seats are wider than the previous ones -- kinda pay for it in a way as the aisles are also slightly narrower...

It's been a while since I've flown AT. Has the seat pitch changed any, or is it still tight (that's my biggest issue)?

I didn't really notice much difference in pitch between the old config and the new one -- even though Club lost about 9 seats (from 21 IIRC to 12 - 3 rows of 2-3-2 to 2 rows at 2-2-2), but I think the overall seat count remains the same. That said, the new seats may be slimmer, so pitch isn't noticeably different.

A genuine rewind since they operated several 757s a few years back

the 757 in a high density layout doesnt go far towards europe.

I've flown on a Finnair 757-200 with 228 seats on HEL-YYZ nonstop. 8 hours 45 minutes.

They just had a round of FA hirings across the big 3 cities, with particular focus on YVR according to a good friend of mine who was involved. This was probably about a month ago. If there are layoffs they probably won't be cabin crew.
Flying refined.

Odyssey International used to fly YYZ-MUC a number of years ago, so thats definitely 8 hr - ish and fairly high density - I've flown on them to Jamaica and they were all single-class.

With the current AC issues, lets hope people this summer jump over to TS for some of the europe stuff. I can honestly say that this past winter was the first time that I haven't flown TS down to an island in the sun... Thomas Cook/Jazz was the cheapest and by a long shot! I have expressed this in another thread, however, price dictates how people travel. Now luckily it was only 3 hours from YYZ-MBJ otherwise i would have been that annoying passenger standing up all of the time. I am 6'3" and i was cramped. The past two trips on TS we were in club class and it was very nice,

This winter I think we will be looking for TS vacations and WS vacations as they seem to be the next best option, however I will not rule out going to BUF to fly US Airways or Jetblue....
