Delta 737-900ER Seats/AVOD Update?

Fri May 04, 2012 3:53 am

I was wondering, does Delta still plans to have AVOD installed on the 739ERs? Last time I heard, DL was planning on having factory-installed Panasonic Eco 9i Integrated Smart monitors in B/E Aerospace Pinnacle seats in Y, despite opposition by Delta EVP Ops Steve Gorman, since he believed that portable tablets are the future of IFE.

So, now several months later, I would like to know if DL still plans on installing the Eco 9i Integrated Smart Monitors in B/E Aerospace Pinnacle seats on the 739ER. Does anyone have info?

Coming directly from RA at a recent employee forum..."Our 737-900s coming online next year will be ETOPS ready and have personal video through-out". So yes, they will come standard.

Too bad they aren't doing wireless AVOD like they have on the 757-300.

That will eventually be rolled out system-wide. The test bed was on 5806 with the entire type being completed shortly after. I've also seen it on a few 738s recently so it is getting there.

Seems like they are wasting money then, installing personal screens on the 739ER's, no?? Why not just install the wireless system throughout??

IDK. I don't remembr the ship number but the a/c where I noticed the streaming movies through GoGo was in fact on a 73H. Let's not forget the movie is good for 24hrs? So I guess the theory is that say you start your travel on a 73H, you can still download the movie because your connecting flight may be on a non-AVOD a/c. That's just my thinking about it. The upgrade to the GoGo equipment is very minimal from what i've seen so I don't think it's that expensive; plus GoGo is footing the bill anyway.

Because many people don't want the hassle of unpacking and and having their laptops or tablets taking up space. Plus, not all laptops have the same battery life. Having personal screens is simply more convenient for many travelers.

Realize that, unless DL shells out a huge amount of money into incentives into buying tablet computers, that a lot of people aren't gonna buy them. I personally only know like 5 people who own them (and I know a BUNCH of people thoughout the world.)

You've GOT to be kidding

Probably every third, or even as high as every other person, has an iPad these days on an airplane. Besides, it's not exactly a baffling ordeal to remove ones computer or iPad from their laptop bag or backpack.

I don't have an iPad...it's not because I can't afford it; i'm just not a "gadget" type of guy. I have a pretty powerful laptop and I have my smart phone. With my phone, I have tons of music stored plus I have the ability to use wifi so I never even saw the need for an iPod. I don't see th point in shelling out $600+ for an iPad when my laptop and iPhone does everything I need to do. So I do understand 100% what you're saying.

I'm not sure about globally but in the US tablet ownership is 1 in 10.

Well out of my close friends, one American, one Japanese, one Thai, one Korean, and one Taiwanese owns an iPad....i have a lot of friends who own kindles or whatever it is that Amazon belts out these days.

Realize that your 1/10 is 10% of Americans, which, while 10% of 304 million is a decent sized number, still doesn't cover no where near the majority of flyers in America (at least, I don't think.)

I just wonder if they will keep the Live TV system... that is one thing that an ipad can't do.
I enjoy the ability to watch CNN (MSNBC) live... The Dish Network doesn't work as well as Direct TV, but is still pretty good.

Since these are domestic aircraft, I'm guessing yes.

IMHO power ports in every seat would be necessary for wireless AVOD to really take off, pardon the pun. My smartphone can't last more than a few hours with constant use, and I'd still like to keep some juice for when I get off the plane. Same for my laptop. Given the option between using in-seat AVOD or one of my portable battery-limited devices, I'd take the in-seat AVOD anytime.

Glad I am not the only person that thinks that way.

Exactly! I love being able to watch ESPN or live sports when flying. I have timed trips before with the live TV flights to do this and avoid missing a game totally.
I've flown on 9V-SPK.

Excuse me if slightly off topic, but what about the 320 fleet? no PTV/AVOD updates here? No plans?

Plans for retrofitting existing domestic aircraft are currently on hold due to high fuel prices. If/when fuel prices go down, Delta may reconsider it. These 739ERs should come with AVOD factory-installed.

FYI, the 739ERs should replace some of the older A320s, as well as older 757s. I heard DL is targeting the 5500-series 752s for replacement.

Not sure what planes your flying on but if i see three people on a 737 with ipads i think that's a lot. Are the new 739s expected to do a lot of transcon flying or are they more for new routes or expansion? Delta sure will have, and already has, a diverse fleet!

They will pretty much be used throughout the domestic system wherever 757s are flown. They will also be ETOPS from the factory, so expect to see them on West Coast-Hawaii routes.
