LAN Perú To Fly To Jauja (JAU)

Sun May 06, 2012 1:23 pm

LAN Perú continues to increase its presence in the growing Peruvian domestic market and will soon launch non-stop services between its hub at LIM to the Francisco Carle de Jauja Airport (JAU), which serves the city of Jauja, Perú. Jauja will be LAN's 15TH destination with-in Perú.

LAN Perú recently launched a twice weekly non-stop service between Tarapoto and Iquitos. The TPP-IQT service is part of LAN Perú's goal to improve connectivity within Perú.

In order to expand its operations in Perú, LAN Perú recently inaugurated the opening of a new maintenance base located Lima's Jorge Chávez International Airport:

Quote:
"This project is an example of the commitment and confidence that LAN Peru has in the development and growth of the country,” said Jorge Vilches, General Manager, LAN Peru. “The new maintenance hangar joins the $660 million investment announced last year for the purchase of eight new aircraft for the LAN Peru fleet and the $50 million that is to be invested over the next five years in the training of Peruvian pilots, crews and mechanics at our new Technical Instruction Center (CIT) which will open in the second half of this year."

LAN Perú S.A. utilizes the A-319 a/c on all of its domestic routes and has a fleet of 20 A-319s with 6 more A-319s on order.

Great to hear LAN is flying to Jauja! LC Perú flies there but most peruvians don't even know that airline exists!
There's only one road to the cities in the Junín Region (where Jauja is located) and sometimes gets blocked because of strikes or landslides, so it's nice to have other options

LAN Perú is interested in code-sharing with LC Perú on certain flights with-in Perú:

Woow, interesting destination! I thought the runway at JAU was not long enough to support a A319 flight, the same as Ayacucho or Andahuaylas.

CORPAC S.A. is improving certain airports in order to handle flights operated with the A319/A320. The LIM-JAU flight will be blocked at 40 minutes. Other destinations that LAN Perú is very interested in linking LIM with include:

Andahuaylas (ANS)
Ayacucho (AYP)
Huaraz (ATA)
Talara (TYL)

IMO, a LIM-TYL route is long overdue.

Yeah, actually LIM-AYP is much need, as its a major city in the Andes and only served by StarPeru and LC Peru, both of them with small aircraft.

Don´t you think 40min is too long? Jauja by air is very close to Lima. I am suspecting LAN is adding minutes here, not to have delays, because I think the real flight time between LIM and JAU can be 30min max.

The flying time will be around 28min; the extra time is ensure that the flights are on-time.

Must be tough for TACA Perú these days, competing directly against such a formidable opponent as LA/LP.

LAN continues to invest in its Peruvian operations and will continue to increase frequencies on domestic routes with-in Perú. Routes such as LIM-AQP, LIM-CUZ, LIM-IQT, LIM-PCL, LIM-TBP, LIM-TCQ, LIM-TRU, LIM-TPP, etc. will all increase in frequency during the second semester.

LAN is implementing new landing and take-off procedures at LIM at other airports in Perú utilizing Performance-based Navigation (PBN) technologies in order to reduce delays at LIM and other airports in Perú. The new flight paths will enable LAN to increase capacity at LIM and other airports in Perú; most notably at CUZ.

Perhaps the topographical conditions in Jauja also justifies the existence of the new flight from the capital city.
Jauja is certainly not located as far as Cuzco or Trujillo from Lima, but I would ask how long is the journey Lima-Jauja by road, in average?

What's Jauja's altitude? Also, how do pax from other cities in Perú currently travel to/from Jauja? Will it be cheaper to fly to/from LIM rather than taking a bus?

One thing that hasn't been mentioned so far is that Jauja Airport mainly serves Huancayo, the 8th largest city in Peru (population 350 000).

On average it takes 7 hours to get to Huancayo from Lima, that's the main reason of this new flight.

Depending on the road traffic on the carretera central. By bus it takes about 7 hours on average from Lima to Jauja. Add half an hour to reach Huancayo.

If LAN can make this connection viable, it will be an interesting alternative to the bus connections.

The only issue is to reach LIM airport. When driving from Miraflores or Surco area to Callao where the airport is located, it can take 30 min if you are lucky, and up to 2 hours if roads are congested...

LAN will have to offer at least 3 daily flights to make this connection viable. One daily flight will make no difference whatsoever.

IMO, LAN will offer at least two daily flights. LAN will serve every destination with-in Perú with at least two daily flights. If demand increases, perhaps LP will add a third flight on certain days. Also, it will be interesting to see if LP code-shares with W4 in the near-term.

LP LIM-TBP doesn't meet this statement at this time.
My interpretation is that this route as well as the proposed LP LIM-JAU would operate at least as 2x daily in the near future.
I hope there is enough demand of passengers in order to satisfy the mentioned proposal.

Regards.

Just returned from Huancayo two days ago by my own car and the trip took about 5 hours but only to Chosica (outskirts of Lima), from Chosica to my home in Miraflores it was at least another hour and a half.

The trip never took more than 40min to me. Sorry, but I find your 2hrs as a very big exageration. Especially now, when you can take the Costanera which has 4 lanes now. 40min max from Miraflores even in rush hour.

The problem is buses are very cheap to Huancayo, just saw a promotion of 29 soles (10 bucks) on the most expensive and luxurious bus line. "Regular" bus companies are even cheaper. Not sure if regular people would prefer to fly if buses are this cheap, specially considering they need to take a bus from Juaja to reach Huancayo which will take an additional hour. LAN might hope to fill their planes with bussiness man and mine workers from the Oroya region.

LAN plans to serve ever destination with-in Perú with at least two daily flights. Currently, TBP is the only destination that does not meet this criteria. However, in July, LP will increase frequency on the LIM-TBP route from a daily service to 11x weekly. The LIM-TBP route is expected to operate 2x daily by Q4.
