LAX:UA And Terminal 9?

Mon May 07, 2012 3:36 am

I happened up this page while searching for interior T8 pics. It shows a proposed T9 west of Sepulveda Blvd. The completion date was estimated around 2000, so I would date these plans four to five years before that date.

Was UA planning a massive LAX expansion in 1995/6? Why didn't they follow through?

It was one of many conceptual ideas kicked around at the airport in the 90s.

UA needed room to and particularly wanted to improve United Express and Shuttle by United ops which had both seen large growth at LAX at the time.

What ultimately came out of the ideas instead was a new(and much wider) T-8 concourse, and the United express box down at the hangars.

So does UA still own/lease the area where the proposed terminal was supposed to be? I see a few UA birds and equipment there.

The "T-9" concourse was to be located on taxiway/alley way on the other side of the Sepulveda tunnel so it was not under anyone's lease.
For the express facility, that was on UA's existing hangar plot -- and where today AA has its Eagle box after UA relocated its express ops pack to the main terminal.

Back in the heyday of Asia travel, UA was planning on making LAX equal to SFO as a west coast hub/Asian gateway. A number of economic and infrastructure reasons killed off the real hub. It was declared a hub but it never approached SFO in size.

1) The 5th runway master plans were shelved; the lack of RJ gates was also a major problem

2) The stock/internet bubble burst

3) The 1997 Asian financial crisis

4) Japan's economy relapsed back to stagnation

The other thing that I see very little information on was the old temporary terminal along Century Boulevard that was used after Grand Central Airport closed but before the current terminal complex was built. I suspect that some of the buildings that United uses were part of the terminal but it is difficult to tell.

i believe that the only buildings left from that era are the aircraft maintenance facilities. The location where the passenger terminals were is now cargo.
