787 Inbound To IAD And DCA

Mon May 07, 2012 3:54 am

Looks like the 787 is on it's way to DC. Stopping in at IAD at 7:48 AM Monday, May 7, before heading over to DCA at around 11 AM.

Does anyone know why it was in TAR?

Could the 787 operate from DCA ?

What about LGA?

I remember when AA, EA and TW flew the DC-10-10, L1011 and A300B4's in to LGA

Yes. Not a great match between the plane's and airport's capabilities though.

Yes. Same problem.

Here you go.... An empty 787 would not have much trouble landing or taking off from DCA / LGA.

Alenia, a major 787 part supplier, is based near there.

Next stop DFW on Friday, then on to STL. Can't wait to see it!

The view at :45 is a picture perfect composition for a plane landing at DCA.

(But it would have been rejected by our screeners.   )

787 was at DCA for beauty reasons only. Boeing has a major office (defense and government relations) in Crystal City overlooking runway 1/19. Widebodies are not allowed at DCA usually. Stop off at IAD was proving run for future ops by UA and possibly ANA as well I would imagine.

You have to fly into DCA from an FAA-approved gateway airport. Taranto, Italy isn't one. IAD is the closest gateway airport to DCA.

FINALLY, with all the speculation on the other thread about why the 787 visited DCA, the answer is:

"Several thousand people are expected to experience the 787 during the course of the airplane's visit, which will culminate Thursday night with the presentation of the Robert J. Collier Award . . ."

Wouldn't that only apply to scheduled service? Seems irrelevant where a publicity flight left the ground.

That's exactly the point--this is treated as a general aviation flight (TSA-approved gateway, not FAA-approved gateway). See http://www.tsa.gov/what_we_do/tsnm/general_aviation/dca_access.shtm

It definitely applies to Part 91 operations (what the Dreamtour flies under). I'm not sure about pure GA.

Flying into DCA requires additional security measures prior to departure; only certain airports are approved by TSA to be able to carry out those measures.

I think you're all making this more complicated than it really is. I'm sure the plane went to IAD first so the crew and whoever else was on the plane could clear customs. There's no formal customs facilities in DCA.

Also in Rosslyn. In fact, Boeign Commercial is in Rosslyn as I recall.

Exactly. They had to clear customs.

"Customs & Immigration" . . . Don't even diplomats have to clear immigration (get their passport stamped)?

Anything can be arranged for the right price. Customs doesn't need a formal facility. It can be as simple as a Customs Crown Vic pulling up to the plane, agents going inside to check passengers and cargo. Then they leave. Seen it myself (not at DCA, however)

Nope. Read up on the DCA security plan: http://www.nbaa.org/ops/security/programs/dassp/
It's far more complex than you probably think.

It had to go somewhere other than DCA; it's not legal to fly from Taranto direct to DCA. And you have to clear Customs at your first port-of-entry. If it were legal to fly Taranto-DCA, you could go directly into DCA from a customs/immigration standpoint.

Quoting JoePatroni (Reply 15):

Yes, there are. http://www.airnav.com/airport/KDCA. Look at the bottom of the "Airport Operations" section. Also, there are Air Canada jets all over the place at DCA, they all have to clear customs/immigration.

Which they clear in Canada at the US Customs and Border Patrol preclearance stations in Canada.

The official tours are tomorrow afternoon. I got on Monday. She's a game changer!
There are two crew bunks, F,C,Y seats. The back galley is all fake though. They
have stickers on windows showing how much bigger the windows are than other
manufacturers. In F they have an overhead with 4 roll a boards in it. The window
switches all work, five clicks to a darkened window.

It's just amazing.

According to the Boeing Twitter account, it's leaving late Friday morning (the 11th) for DFW. No firm time yet. They did tours Tuesday, Wednesday, and today on it, and then moved it from in front of the historic terminal over to the general aviation area for the Collier Trophy dinner this evening. I would imagine that the departure time depends on how late the dinner runs tonight to give the crews ample rest and time to configure the airplane for the flight.

So I was bored after work and decided to hit Gravelly Point for a while, driving by DCA I just happened to notice the 787 parked over there (I thought it had come and gone)... so on my way back home to Old Town I drove over by economy parking to get a better look. Amazing, though whatever dinner was going on had a lot of police all over the place and I was a bit paranoid about getting pulled over and ending up in Guantanamo. Will try to catch a glimpse of her leaving tomorrow. Very exciting.
