US Adds PHL-SAT/AUS; Increases DFW/JFK

Mon May 07, 2012 4:54 pm

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/us-air...aunch-improved-east-160000151.html

US will add daily mainline flights from PHL to both AUS and SAT. It will also add a 6th PHL-DFW flight and 2 additional flights from CLT-JFK.

Interesting. Perhaps US is sending a signal to AA (with the DFWPHL and CLTJFK additions?)

Definitely see some sort of pre-emptive move behind the PHL-AUS/SAT additions. Good for US.

WN flew both PHL to SAT/AUS back in 2008, but US will have much more success than WN did on this route

This is a great development. US has been flying very healthy loads AUS-CLT. This will probably help avoid the need to add more capacity on that route while also opening up more connection possibilities including transatlantic connections and more small markets in the Northeast. The WN flights gave a good sense of the market on an O&D basis, but with US greater connectivity through PHL (and the smaller plane) I think this is a very solid add both for the airline and the AUS market.

All of these make complete sense, especially the new PHL-Texas services. Now if they could only do something decent to IAH/DFW from DCA.

Great additions for US. Not sure I get the start date though. It's during a time when most airlines slash schedules.

Wonder if US is going to throw any specials at this. For a Mon-Thurs AUS-PHL trip in mid-Sept US currently wants $550 for both nonstops

SAT-PHL was definitely a route that everyone saw coming. SAT-CLT is always booked on their A319s. US is doing absolutely wonderful at SAT.

How old is the SAT-CLT service? Was it operational in 2007?

Another question regarding the US PHL hub? Any chance US will launch PHL-MEX? I remember there were plans for this route in 2003 but then something happened and the route was never launched.
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

I remember posting a question a while back about US possibly serving SAT and/or AUS from PHL, so this really isn't that big of a shocker for me. It's good to see it happen tho. Adding frequencies from their two main hubs to two of AA's markets is rather intriguing. (PHL-DFW and CLT-JFK).

Great to see the new service between the Northeast and Central Texas! As others have noted, with the CLT loads, these flights certainly provide a nice option for Central Texas O&D travelers.

That said, yet another morning flight out of AUS! It never ceases to amaze me how many planes RON here, which makes things interesting at security!

B6s sked jfk to clt is a mess that is constantly changing. Down to 2 flights this summer.

Glad to see US give them a run for their money

I wonder if AUS will see more morning originators/evening terminators because of this:

Jets to get more places to park at Austin-Bergstrom
Friday, March 26, 2010

Quote:
A $30 million project is under way at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport to create more spots for jets to park overnight near the terminal, which will speed up on-time morning departures.

The project, on land east of the eastern end of the Barbara Jordan Passenger Terminal, will add 13 spots to the 26 now available for jets to park after they make their final stop for the day.

[SNIP]

The project will be complete in 2012. Federal money is covering about a third of the cost.

Unrelated to this particular thread, but I happened to notice something I found interesting on AUS's website. Ever since the airport opened in 1999, US has operated out of Gates 21 & 23. I noticed on the latest Gate Map UA has given up Gate 23, but taken over Gate 25 which was formerly vacant. Gate 21 is now vacant and that's right next door to JetBlue at Gate 19. I wonder if JeBlue will take Gate 21.

I'm not sure it's connected. I fly PHL-DFW on US on average 10-15 times per year round trip, and often route through CLT as close in the nonstops are often booked up or nearly so (and thus very expensive with no upgrades left). It's needed a bit more capacity for a while regardless of what AA is doing on the route, or what US and AA might do together in the future.
