MEA To Take Delivery Of 2 More Aircraft This Year

I have just read on MEA's Facebook page that they are introducing two new aircraft in "coming months".
Does anybody know what these aircraft are? I didn't realise they had any outstanding deliveries.

I thought MSN 5000 was the last one but maybe they are getting more from somewhere else ?

In other MEA news :

MEA 2011 profits plunge to $40 million

BEIRUT: Operating profits of Middle East Airlines, Lebanon’s national carrier, declined to $40 million in 2011 from $90 million in 2010 due to a rise in the prices of fuel, increase in the cost of salaries of employees, pilots and crew and the deteriorating conditions in the region, MEA chairman of Mohammad Hout said Tuesday.

“These factors contributed to the fall in profits last year but we expect the picture to change this year if the price of oil becomes more stable,” Hout told The Daily Star.

He warned that if the price of fuel continued to rise steadily then this would have an impact on the profitability of MEA.

I read that also, but then in the last few weeks I read that passengers numbers were to rise significantly through 2012 as travellers from the Gulf and Jordan(who make up most of Lebanon's tourists) will be arriving by air, rather than by road (they love to bring their cars with them) due to the closure of Syria's borders .

I see they are still interested in Cyprus Airways.. but with regards to the two additional aircraft, I have just read that the newest A320 completed their A320 order, which leads me to think that perhaps the new aircraft won't be A320s... but something else.

Finally joining SkyTeam will increase business at MEA. It's a beautiful country and has been peaceful throughout the Arab Spring - cos while there are plenty of political problems in Lebanon, it is free and democratic so there isn't going to be an uprising in the Syrian / Egyptian / Tunisian sense.

Great to see MEA do well. I remember in the 90s after the civil war was over and Lebanese started returning in hordes from the Gulf / Paris / Detroit / Houston / Sydney / Sao Paolo (gosh they really ended up everywhere!), and MEA with their little wartime fleet of 707s and two A310s had to haul a pair of 720Bs out of storage for the summer of 95. I loved seeing those little Boeings coming back into service, after such a lot of dangerous flying in the 80s (about a dozen were destroyed in war, although only one - on 1 Jan 76 - with passengers onboard).

Knowing how tough those old planes were, especially those last two, would almost say they are these mystery two coming into the fleet this summer! And again for the summer of 2032, and 2112.

Very nicely put! Yes, it would be lovely to have the 707s back in service, although I'm thinking that people will miss the lovely inseat IFE and nice new seats on the A321/320s! I regret not having the chance to fly on MEA's 707s. When I first went to Beirut with my father and mother (my father hadn't been back since 1975) in 1994, I remember seeing MEA's two 747-200s side by side, plus an assortment of 707s! We had arrived on an Olympic Airways 737-200 and I remember the old terminal building, bullet ridden, crumbling and very dated inside- orange carpets, dark mahogany wood that was all the fashion in the 1970s! Plus the massive Welcome to Beirut sign and clock. My father was always looking for the cheapest fares so would invariably arrive with Olympic. I remember when we arrived in Athens on our return, we walked out of the terminal and walked to the beach and went swimming! Then dried off, got dressed and checked in for our return flight to London. Bizarre. Times have certainly changed!

So, I gather they are receiving two A320s this year and a further A320 next year. Good for MEA! Do you think we will see any further A330s?

The engines on that A320 are CFMs yet all MEA's other A320s/A321s have IAEs. Why are they switching now? Does anyone know what the cabin looks like?

You are correct. MSN 5000 fulfilled MEA's order with Airbus.

These three additional A320s (which as zkojq pointed out are CFM-powered unlike MEA's current fleet) were ordered after MEA sold 2 of its 6 A321s to Turkish charter carrier Atlasjet in December of last year. These are to replace the A321s that were sold.

I'm not completely positive, but I believe these three additional A320s are being leased from GECAS, so MEA entered into a contract with GECAS rather than Airbus.

But why are they replacing them with smaller aircraft? I thought the 321s suited ME's needs quite nicely?

I think the 320's are a better fit for MEA. It gives them better yield during the winter months when it's not always easy to fill up the 321's.

But really, what MEA needs is a bunch of E190s in my opinion. Just think how many routes can be launched and how many routes can be served daily year round (FCO, MXP, ATH, etc....)

Obviously, I am not the CEO of MEA, but I am always puzzled at why this type of aircraft is never considered.

They were considering CRJ200s at one point in a joint venture with Syrian Arab Airlines, although this will not happen.
But if Skyteam want a valuable member in the Middle East, MEA WILL have to up their regional offerings and E190s would be advantageous for them. They could quite happily open up new destinations for the airline- Aqaba, Alexandria, Aleppo, Luxor, Malta , Damascus etc and then, as you say, serve Athens, Cairo, Amman, Larnaca, Istanbul with more frequencies. The A320 and A321s that were freed up could then explore Madrid, Vienna, Moscow, Tunis, Khartoum, Mumbai etc.

Spanair had planned to launch Barcelona-Beirut twice daily before they went under. Surely there's a marked in Spain for direct flights.

MEA management announced that 4 A320-214 (CFM) were leased. 3 will be delivered in 2012 and the last aircraft in summer 2013. A321 phase out will continue next year.
SkyTeam entry still planned for end JUNE 2012.

It's not gonna happen. MEA made it clear they're not interested in becoming a transit hub. In my opinion, that's mainly because they can't compete with larger hubs in the region (like DXB, AUH, DOH...), as well as because of the political situation in Lebanon that puts the airport out of business every now and then.

Why are they getting rid of the A321s? With 4 leased A320s coming, I guess that means MEA is planning on staying at 15 aircraft rather than expanding?

Odd that the 321s are going and they are being replaced with leased aircraft. Are they trying to raise some cash? I thought the 321s were all owned.
On my last A321 flight I thought they were looking a bit tatty inside. They must see very heavy use during the summer period.

The E190s would work perfectly to support the local O&D market (and pick up some transit pax). I think it's a given that MEA would not and could not compete with the likes of EK, EY, QR, etc...

But there are many routes that could perform well year round with the E190...just my $0.02 worth

RJ has a hub of some description and I don't think their infrastructure is any better than what MEA has at Beirut.
I something feel a little frustrated at the missed opportunities at MEA. They seem to only want to cater for Lebanese visiting Beirut in the summer rather than creating a year round transit hub. They could expand their African network and be a good transit point for North-East passengers. :-/

I on my side think MEA should limit itself to be a boutique airline and establish itself as the undisputed option in and out of Lebanon. In this perspective I do believe that something smaller than the A320 and more efficient than an A318 should enter the fleet at MEA to allow same day return to major business destinations such as CAI & IST. Maybe they think they can achieve this with A320's instead of A321's and sparing the additional cost of a new type. I still wonder why they're not adding A319's, I think I remember they wanted some and then took A320's because the delivery was possible sooner.

Even if it has a great and ambitious name, I don't think MEA should play the regional hub, and definitely not the global hub game. Let them focus on connecting Lebanon, on improving their inflight service (few are commanding inflight crews), and on increasing their market share at home, that will be good enough.

If you think about all the European airlines that are no longer operating in and out of BEY (OK, OS, MA, KL, Swiss, etc....) Huge missed opportunity for MEA for not having the right equipment to fill the gaps
