Helicopter Ditches In North Sea - All OK

Thu May 10, 2012 12:07 pm

Quote:

A helicopter has ditched in the North Sea, Coastguards have said.

The incident - about 25 miles off Aberdeen - is believed to involve a Bond helicopter.

It is understood all 14 on board made it into a liferaft, and are in process of being airlifted by helicopters.

UPDATE: All onboard have now been flown to hospital as a precautionary measure.

The helicopter involved was a Bond EC 225 Super Puma. this follows just a few days after an Easa safety bulletin grounded all EC 135s for checks for cracks found in the main rotor.

All helicopter flights out of Aberdeen have now been suspended as a precautionary measure.

?? Why? One helicopter ditches, so all helicopters are grounded?

Where's the emoticon for knee-jerking?

That's not an entirely accurate statement... From the BBC website:

"Bond Aviation Group has said it is suspending EC225 Super Puma helicopter flights until further notice."

Back in my college days we had a Super Puma that got wet as one of our projects.

Becase it's the 3rd time in 3 years that one of these helicopters from the same company has ditched in to the north Sea, one in 2009 being fatal. Its a precautionary grounding by the company to check the fleet.

The two aren't related. Bond grounded the 135 fleet following information from Eurocopter. It's nothing to do with the ditching.

At the time of posting, the article said that ALL flights by ALL operators had been suspended. Subsequently, all non-ec225 operations have resumed. At the time of posting it was a perfectly accurate statement.

This does not make sense and is what I was commenting on.

This may - if there is a history or indication for ec225 craft that would warrant it.
