Amazing Video LH MD-11F 'Undertaken' In Flight

Fri May 11, 2012 9:35 am

Hi All,

Check out this amazing bit of footage filmed from the flight deck of a new Global Systems 748 Cargo as they pass 1000ft underneath a LH Cargo MD-11F on a NAT track over the Atlantic http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c58evspEf7A

Could never get that too.
But it's a great video. Lots of power in there.

Wow, fantastic footage! Thanks for sharing.
Must have been quite the view for both crews. Too bad there's not a video from the MD-11's point of view too...

Very cool video! I had a similar experience on an LH 744 when we overtook this Turkish A340.

Awesome video!

Not to be a party pooper but should pilots be making videos when they are at the controls? Isn't this the same thing as working on unrelated things on a laptop?

Years ago I was riding the jump seat in the cockpit of a 767 from ZRH to JFK. A LH 747 passed underneath us and as he did the Ground Proximity Altimeter jumped for a few seconds. I always thought that was pretty cool...

Nice video...thanks.

One of my favorite books written by a pilot talks about how boring his flight from LA to Hawaii was and how much he couldn't wait to make is position report over the radio, so I see no problem with them taking a video. Pretty sure the pilots in both planes were letting the computers fly at that point. It was only a few minute video as well.

The beauty of RVSM. Just one question: Wake turbulence?

You must've been flying close to stall speed to get un unblurry picture of a cruising A340

1,000 feet of separation can be pretty unnerving (as a passenger) when the path of your plane actually intersects another...

On my last trip to Japan, out in the middle of nowhere over northern Canada, my JAL flight had another 777 pass directly above us at about a 75 degree angle of track. I was watching him come towards us with some concern. He flew directly overhead and it looked from my vantage point like he was almost close enough to clip our tail. Obviously must have been 1,000 feet above, but it can seem really close when another plane's coming fast like that.

The pilots aren't at the controls. Oh, yes, they are sitting in front of the controls, but I'd guess during this filming, they hadn't touched the controls since about 5,000 to 9,000 feet. Well, unless you consider entering a level change in the MCD.

It would appear to me that the operator of the video camera is sitting in a jumpseat aft of the flying pilots' seats.

IIRC, wake turbulence is dangerous if you're directly behind another aircraft's flight path. The 748 is well below the MD-11, so I doubt the vertical span of the wake turbulence would reach them..

Scary as f*ck! I was on a transcon DL flight. Casually looked out the window to see a jet spewing contrails out... headed directly towards us. Passed below. The scariest part of it all was how fast it happened. From sighting to passing it was no more than 5 seconds.. and the other jet was *WAY* far out. By the time I told my seatmate we'd already passed the contrails. Initially frightening, but a very strange and surreal beauty.

Directly behind and less than 1000ft below. Since there is 1000ft between the two, there is no wake turb.

If I recall correctly, aircraft operating in RVSM airspace are required to be on autopilot. Rand Peck has talked about this in his blog.

I heard a host on talk radio bring up Dihydrogen Monoxide one time. He ran it a whole 45 minutes before a single caller got it. The others were all in favor of government regulation, or banning it. Scary people.

Just one question: Wake turbulence?

This is the best time to demonstrate wake turbulence - When it's visible. About 500-1500 feet behind the plane, you'll see the contrails start to spin about the longitudinal axes of the wingtips (I believe that's the best way to put it). This is a visible manifestation of the wake vortices, which are the source of wake turbulence. These vortices, in calm settings (aloft is never calm, I know), drift outward from the center of the plane's path at about 5 knots and descend at about 500 feet per minute. So being 1000 feet below them (and pretty far off their direct course), this plane is in no harm's path.

I've had a few encounters of 1,000 and 2,000ft separation, I'm liking the same direction/1,000ft thing! More chance to set up the shot.

It's pretty cool! I like how the No. 2 engine trail appears (does it really?) to descend to be directly between the other two. I love the image at the 23-31 sec mark.

I also like the shout out comment to Airliners.net, it's the top comment so far (guess we're all "liking it", makes me wonder who youtube poster "dot13badj" is on A.net. Oh yes, and on the "controversy" with the music? I like the music.
