Norwegian Applies For US Service

Fri May 11, 2012 9:41 pm

Norwegian Air Shuttle ASA, today applied with the DOT for issuance of a foreign air carrier permit to enable it to conduct services to the US.

Norwegian seeks both scheduled and charter authority for US points and beyond in accordance with the US-EU open skies agreement.

The application makes no mention of specific routes, or start up dates.

OST-2012-0075

Any guesses? I could certainly see a scheduled NYC route, and maybe charters down to Florida.

NYC and Bangkok has been announced as their first two longhaul destinations. Otherwise I think they intend to fill some voids to where SAS doesn't operate.

New York is first, expected to be followed by Miami. The plan supposedly, as mentioned in other threads, is to hire FA's and base them (and I believe the planes, too) in the United States - cheaper labor than Scandinavia.

Are Norway a party to the US-EU openskies agreement, as Norway is not part of the EU? I'd guess not, as surely they could operate what they like under openskies?

Therefore, then, what routes are being applied for?

Norway is part of the openskies agreement, but new airlines still must get the necessary permission and permits to begin flying into the US (or into Europe in the case of a US airline). Assuming all the paperwork is filled out correctly and the government thinks that Norwegian is ready and able to perform the flights, it will all be rubber stamped and they can fly wherever they want assuming they have the slots/gates.

Norway falls under the US-EU Air Transport Agreement even though its not a direct member of the EU. Same with Iceland for instance.

Also regardless, an air carriers must still seek and meet the qualifications (ownership criteria, financial fitness, safety etc) to gain a foreign air carrier permit to enable it to conduct services to the US.
Once achieved while routes and frequencies would be not be restricted coming from open-skies participant there still remains the regulatory notification requirements to inform the US government of intended routes, frequencies etc.

Norwegian have mushroomed spectacularly in Europe ove the last few years. Is any proposed expansion into new markets not likely to put the whole business at risk? Their fleet is all B733/8 aircraft after all?

Expand or die! They have to do something to remain a viable entity going forward. If they can keep their cost low they will have the ability to fill the void of others that are falling by the wayside. I hope to see them in the USA. I love the colors of their planes.

I forgot to mention that they also have an order for 100 Boeing 737 8 MAX

So:

Boeing 737 800
Boeing 737 800 MAX
Airbus 320 NEO
Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner

Their Boeing 737 300 is leaving their fleet.

To go where exactly?

5th freedom flights are only justifiable in a few markets worldwide, much less North America. Just because they have the right doesn't mean they will use it.

And some would say that their Scandinavian competitor seems to occupy another body entrance with the dirt and filth on its frame, giving the impression of another kind of plug......

For those who did not get the irony, It would be nice to discuss the topic and keep those kinds of comparison out if the discussion!

Anyone know the usual response time on such application? From what I've heard, reservations for New York are planned to open in October. That's not much time.
