When Did National Airlines Start Service To FLL?

Sun May 13, 2012 2:33 am

For years National Airlines served Miami and West Palm Beach but not Ft.Lauderdale(FLL). When did they
first start service to FLL and what were their routes? I think mostly to New York City to compete with Eastern and
Northeast Airlines(merged with Delta in 1972).

Glancing through my collection of NA schedules, FLL service began around 1960 with the introduction of the Electra, with flights to PBI and MIA. Here's another site showing older National timetables.

No NA at FLL in 1/58.

The 2/59 timetable OAG shows a MIA-FLL-EWR-FLL-MIA DC-6B, but in the 15 Feb QR OAG that isn't shown, and it says NA's schedules were effective 1 Feb. So who knows whether that existed.

Northeast DC-6Bs to DCA and IDL started that winter.

Starting October 1959 NA flew a DC-6B IDL-FLL-IDL; in 3/60 they had Electras IDL-FLL-MIA and IDL-DCA-PBI-FLL-MIA. In 5/60 the IDL nonstop was gone.
