SEATTLE, May 17, 2012

SEATTLE, May 17, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Alaska Airlines announced today it will offer four flights a week between Portland, Ore., and Kauai, Hawaii, starting Nov. 5. The new seasonal service is in addition to flights Alaska offers from Portland International Airport to Honolulu, Maui and Kona, on the Big Island of Hawaii.

I figured it was only a matter of time before this happened. Congrats to PDX, whose sole hub carrier is adding nonstop mainline service to DCA and LIH, with regional affiliates adding nonstops to SBA, BZN, PSC and resuming BIL, BLI, and MSO. Not to mention the airport's other new flights on a bevy of low cost carriers, including F9 to COS (which has exceeded the airline's expectations), NK to DFW, WN to AUS, and brand new tenant VX to SFO and LAX! Exciting times for this market indeed.
Flying in the middle seat of coach is much better than not flying at all!

This is awesome news for Portland! Definitely a great year for additional/returning services...I'm starting to see PDX as the little airport that could........

Excuse me while I keel over in shock. Hasn't everyone been speculating that this would be AS's next new route?

So when is SAN-LIH going to be announced? I thought AS would beat G4 to BLI-OGG, but I guess not.

   This puzzles me too.

So when is SAN-LIH going to be announced?

I was pretty confident that we'd see a split (daily) flight between LIH and KOA from SAN before the end of the year. I guess I've been misreading the tea leaves again... (Maybe it just doesn't work with Lipton's Instant?) Oh well, it's nice to dream.

No question that Portland is the golden land of opportunity for Alaska and Horizon in 2012! Seems to be pretty guilded for other cx as well -- Virgin, Delta, Spirit (and others?) all growing as well this year. Apparently the economy must be turning around quickly in the region and that's great to see.

More congrats to PDX and AAG!

Yes, my vision for PDX in the next decade or two will be that all of the major carriers will either go down to RJ-flights only, or pull out of PDX entirely. Then the airport will solely belong to AS and LCCs only...

I mean, look at the facts. Big airlines (with the exception of AS) are slowly cutting back PDX service, while AS and LCCs expand. For example, HA recently cut their OGG flight, now they just do HNL (likely thanks to AS). Last I checked UA now only has two daily RJ flights to LAX, no mainline at all. The international concourse is a ghost town. The list goes on.

But go take a look at the C concourse! Bustling with AS activity, and still growing...

It seems like PDX is turning into an LCC destination. I suppose that it fits in with Portland's economy and the people living here. Think about it. NK only added PDX last fall and already they're expanding to DFW. B6 brings back their seasonal BOS flight in a few weeks. WN is expanding to AUS, etc etc.

Yes. I am not sure about DL expansions, but AS, F9, NK, and VX are certainly expanding at PDX. (VX starts June 5)

Oh yes. Except QX is gone - it's all AS livery now. The Q400s were rebranded as AS aircraft about a year ago. (I think)

Anyone who wants to learn more about AS's flights to Hawaii should read this recent thread:

I think it's time for me to find a new airport...

Um, don't tell the thousand plus QX employees that! It's in livery only. Aircraft are flown as "Alaska flight_____, proudly operated by Horizon"

UA also has mainline to SFO. That's mainline service to 6 of 8 domestic hubs, with RJ service to LAX.

DL isn't flying a single RJ into PDX and has 767 service to Atlanta this summer.

US added PHL and CLT service for the summer.

B6 has already started their seasonal BOS service.

Not sure why you are so negative against PDX and Alaska, AllnessW. I think it sounds like a great idea for you to go find another airport.

After reading AlnessW assessment of PDX one could really get depress about their own airport, but thank God his assessment does not match reality.......Maybe he should find a new airport because I'm proud of the growth were seen this past year....

I am not trying to be negative. By all means I think it is good news that PDX is recovering. I was just giving my predictions on future service and what we might see. Like many other posters have said, PDX seems to be growing, and this is a good thing. And if I don't care for AS? That's my own fault.

Yeah, and DL flies mainline equipment into AMS and NRT too. Yep, PDX sure is dying out among non-LLC and non-AS/QX airlines......

UA, DL, etc long ago ceeded the U.S. west coast (not inter-California) to AS. That created opportunities for VX and others. UA along with AS were the biggest players for the last 15 years and when UA began to abandon the north-south routes on the west coast it played a large part in the creation of VX. UA has only themselves then to blame for what is now a large thorn in their side out of SFO.

Hatbutton was correct. Not only is PDX not dying out as far as mainline service, but the city itself is very vibrant and growing. It's not exactly a stagnating Rust Belt kind of place now. AS is expanding there now. AMS and NRT are holding there own; and DL has mentioned possible CDG service in the future.

The few significant PDX discontinuances like AA PDX-ORD are more a reflection on the airline being sick, not PDX.

I remember being surprised when I first heard that AA used to do ORD, if you consider how saturated that route already is by UA and AS (whom AA codeshares with).

The problem with AA on the ORD route, was UA was operating DC8's, DC-10's then 757's, 767's and even a weekly 747 vs AA starting with the 727-100 then going to the M80, people just liked UA much better. My AA rep would speak on the subject often, always hoping we'd get a seasonal upgauge to a 757. IIRC NW also operated PDX-ORD with a DC-10 in the late 70's and early 80's, they also flew SEA-ORD with a DC-10 and 747. AS is a rather new entrant in the market.

Boy, those were the days! It's so sad now that there are no widebodies to anywhere but Europe or Asia. Even TATL flights now might be a narrow-body. IIRC there was even a 747 flight between PDX-SEA for a time. Anyone remember? Was it TWA? PanAm?

They did indeed operate SFO with a 72S for a fair amount of time, but near the end of the PDX hub, the SFO flight was operated by OO for DL on a CRJ, I flew the flight a couple of times.

Indeed the old days, and surely missed by many, myself included. PA did operate a 747 between PDX-SEA, onwards to FAI and as a tag for HNL flights, but had no local traffic rights. BN, NW & UA have operated 747's PDX-SEA-PDX at one time or another for paying passengers. BTW TW never flew the 747 PDX-SEA-PDX, but did fly the L10, 767 and M80.

I doubt it, they pulled out to fly to SEA instead, although the flights were full in season, LH struggled with keeping year round service, PDX was too small a market for both NW to AMS and LH to FRA.

Quoting AlnessW (Reply 29):

Yes, the PDX hub was in the 90's, there are some very cool pics of the DL M11's at PDX in the database. Several liveries, and several with the 5 all around the end of D concourse. At one time, the majority of D during the mid-day noon time, was lined both sides with a mix of 72S's, 733's, L10's, 767's, 757's, and a DL/OO CRJ or two, non-stops to SEA, YVR, BOI, SLC, SFO, LAX, LAS, DFW, CVG, JFK, BOS and ATL all operated as connections from the Asian arrivals.
