Where Is This Airport?

Thu May 17, 2012 2:01 pm

Hi,

There is a picture used in a BBC online article showing a Virgin America jet parked near a line showing the border between the US and Canada. Where is this? Anyone have anymore info about the photo?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-radio-and-tv-18086952

Thanks

There are four cross-border airports:

North-South runways that cross the US-Canada border:
*Piney Pinecreek Border Airport --> asphalt runway,
*Avey Field State Airport --> rwy with gravel surface

East-West runways parallel to the border, with airport facilities on both sides:
*Coronach/Scobey Border Station Airport --> turf surface
*Coutts/Ross International Airport --> turf surface

So, the pic seems to have been taken at Piney Pinecreek.

This is likely a photo from the inagural flight to Toronto a few years back. I don't remember if the first flight was from SFO or LAX...

Based on the red carpet and such, I suspect this was setup at Toronto for VX's route launch, not an actual border crossing.

It seems unlikely the airport is on an actual border. Having a large demarcated line between two friendly countries is fairly impractical. Probably just a marketing/media thing for VX.

Could it be special markings on the ramp to indicate the the pre-clearance zone for aircraft heading to the US?

Such a line does exist between the US/Canada, although not at an airport. The towns of Stanstead, Quebec and Derby Line, Vermont, are built right on the border, with numerous roads and buildings intersecting the border.

That clearly wasn't my point. Several US-Canada border towns do that for tourists, particularly before there were more official border crossings. An airport straddling an international border would create all sorts of legal issues, but even if it were done somehow, there would never be such a demarcated line -- mostly because it's pointless but also because there wouldn't be any tourists to impress.

What towns paint on streets for tourists is irrelevant compared to the markings permitted on an airport apron or taxiway, particularly when solid red lines like this are generally intended to demarcate the SIDA sterile area.

That airport is far too small for any Virgin America aircraft. Runway is only 3,300 ft.

Also, I can't find the photo referred to in the BBC link. Where is it?

BBC changed the picture in the story. The old photo was of a Virgin Atlantic jet parked near a red line that said United States on one side of the line and Canada on the other. There were two RCMPs on the Canadian side of the line. With the information provided by SFOA380, I googled images for Virgin America and Toronto and several similar images showed up.

I asked because I though the photo had to be staged somehow.

Thanks for your input.

I didn't see the picture but I'm positive it's not Piney...no way could an Airbus land there.

The only airport suitable for a jet and very close to the uS-Canada border is Abbotsford, BC.

The image is stock editorial image sold by Getty Images marking the introduction of Virgin America service to YYZ. Picture was taken at YYZ - like already mentioned.

Curious? I notice the shadow cast by the Airbus is directly beneath the plane. However the shadow cast by the person standing off to the right casts a very long shadow. I suspect a Photoshop job. Anybody else notice this? I could be wrong. I thought I was wrong back in 1980 but I was wrong.

The sun is also in the photo if you don't feel like comparing shadows...

Anyway, explained here:

I'm watching Jeopardy. The category is worst Madonna songs. "This one from 1987 is terrible".

Here's another photo from NY TImes. Same "border", different photographer, different angle, shadows all in same direction.

Here's another without the "border" (and a different photographer still). But is that White Knight 2 in the background?? Cool!
