IB A340 To LHR?

Thu May 17, 2012 4:29 pm

Just noticed a Iberia A340 making its approach to LHR from MAD. Since when does such an aircraft operate on this route?

I'm not quite sure when it started, but I don't think it's more than a year, and it's just on one evening flight.

Mostly, it's a 343, but at weekends (Friday and Sunday), it can often be a 346.

Part of IAG Cargo's shuttle between LHR and MAD. IB puts a daily 340, BA puts a 767.

I saw it a few weeks back as I was driving along the A30. I put it down to a one of due to MX or consolidation of flights, but it seems from the above that it's a regular visitor.

They were regular visitors back in the late 90s.

It started becoming a regular thing from November 2011, as stated it is do to with cargo as it connects nicely with IB south American arrivals into MAD. I have flown on the A346 in November 2011 and the A343 last March and on both flights the cabin was half empty but noticed them loading a lot of belly cargo.

The 6.30 pm flight was operated by an Iberia wide body from the early 1970s through to the 90s by a DC10 and its only relatively recently they deployed the A321 on most services,.
The A340 is really just a reinstatement of the required cargo capacity.
