Terminal Maps At LAX

Sat May 19, 2012 12:14 am

Is United still in terminal 6 at LAX or are these maps just not updated? http://www.lawa.org/welcome_lax.aspx?id=246 it's the same on UA.com as well https://www.united.com/web/en-US/content/travel/airport/maps/lax.aspx

The answer is: yes UA is still in T6 and will remain there, yes UA premier check-in is in T6, and no, those maps are not up to date in any way shape or form.

DL, UA and AS all have operations in T6.

UA has around 20 flights a day out of T6 still.

The gates on the connector building between the satellite and the terminal are used by UA on the T7 side and DL on the T5 side. The satellite itself is mostly AS but DL and UA use those gates too at certain times of the day.

Pretty much all of the gates in the satellite/rotunda are shared...T6 has some very complex usage rights/prefered use and priority rights on the gates.

Interesting to know, I suppose that would make sense with all of its shared usage. It sounds like it is almost like a "common use facility?"

Though I do recall once departing out of LAX on DL and our flight was at Terminal 6, gate 61. The podium and gate area was definitely painted in DL colors.

Is T6 connected to T5 and T7 airside? Or if you are connecting with UA and arrive in one and depart from the other do you have to go and out and back through security?

And is it true that PMCO still only use T6, or is UA all mixed up together?

No, Terminals 5-8 are all connected post-security.

I am not sure, however I think it is all mixed up together now through Terminals 6, 7, and 8.

Except by a tunnel. In some terminals that tunnel is still open (or it was the last time I used one of those terminals.) I mostly use T-1, T-2, T-8, and TBIT which never had tunnels. T3-7 did. There were also tunnels connecting the satellite buildings from T-4 to T-7. I think one of those tunnels is still open.

Yes the tunnels are a remnant of the early jet age when all the gates at LAX were separated from the ticketing buildings.

Here's how it breaks down as of now.

UA has the "neck" gates - 60, 61, 62, 63 as its own.

The remaining gates are all common use, however AS has preferential use of 8 of them.

DL usually uses 68A or B at certain times of the day but not exclusively. I see today that it has a flight at 66, for example.

F9 squeeze in wherever there's room when the flights arrive.

CM usually uses 66, I think it is, but it doesn't have to. It simply has to be in one of the gates at the top of the stairs in the back because those have sterile corridor access to the FIS.

G4 and NK are now in Terminal 3.

One correct to above.
G4 now uses T-5 gates. While their ticket counter remains in T-6, Delta very recently began to do their ground handling.

As for United, they are a heavy users of T-6 and will continue to do so as part of their master lease. As an example on Friday they had 29 flights utilize T-6 gates including the rotunda gates.

I do not think they can move to T-2. T-2 is currently being used by KLM, AF, Air NZ, VS, Hawaiin, VA(?) and Aero Mexico. T-2 cannot accomodate all those domesctic carriers.

VA(?)

If I am not mistaken, VA sends departures out of Terminal 3 (gate 38?) and arrivals into Terminal 5, using the FIS facility there.

This is because it's difficult if not impossible for them to park the 744 in T5 without having to close nearby gates. I don't know even if they changed the position of the jetways they could fix this situation. I believe the 744 will soon be gone and the NRT flight will be going back to 77E/77L for the summer.

I think some might not be aware CO had all their flights out of T6 prior to the merger. They ran quite a few flights and with the amount UA has out of LAX, I don't think it would be logistically possible for them to only use 7 & 8. UA has been using 8 for quite sometime now for the A319/A320s which eases some of the congestion in T7. However, I believe UA can't use the T8 gates for their 73NGs. With the winglets, they would have to close the gate next to them because of safety clearance, or re-align them in which they would lose a few gates so it makes sense to leave as is.

More and more PMCO flights have been departing from T7 and PMUA flights have also are now going out of the T6 60-63 gates. If a UA flight is using a gate in the rotunda portion, there's a gate open long enough they can deplane the a/c before AS needs it. It seems DL has been using the rotunda gates during high traffic periods, especially for redeye and noon time departures.

FYI regarding United's operations in Terminal 6:

As of May 15, United has designated the western end of the Terminal 6 check-in area as the "Aloha Lobby" with a special section for customer check-in for Hawaii flights. (This area is adjacent to the current "Premium Customers' Lobby.") All United departures to HNL, ITO, KOA, LIH, and OGG are being assigned to Terminal 6 gates 60, 61, 62, and 63 whenever possible, and customer service agents assigned to work in Terminal 6 are encouraged to wear Hawaiian shirts and accessories.

I was looking at the Vintage Aerial LAX link from reply 16 and found from the same source (Los Angeles Fire Department Historical Society's photo stream) an very good pic of the March 1, 1978 CO DC-10 accident @ LAX
http://www.flickr.com/photos/lafdhs/...15012172/in/set-72157627245492095/
In the upper left side of that pic there appears to be ironically a billboard ad w/ an image of a CO DC-10.
