Delta Mainline On LAX-MCI

My original post got deleted but: starting August 14, 2012 DL will have mainline aircraft on the LAX to MCI flight.

Flight DL 830
Departs MCI at 7:30am
Arrives LAX at 9:10am

Flight DL 920
Departs LAX at 6:30pm
Arrives MCI at 11:58pm

The flights will be operated with A319 equipment.


**Also on June 7 DL will add a JFK to MCI flight

like! It's nice to see more and more routes being taken by mainline vice outsourced flying.

Please tell us all why DL shouldn't be flying this route, and/or why any carrier should or should not be flying a given route?

Hopefully DL will add mainline to LGA as well. With F9 dropping the route, the added capacity would be nice.

Delta's technically been flying this for a while. Had an E175 on it for a good amount of time, and now apparently needs the capacity to an A319. So yes, Delta should be flying this route if they deem a larger aircraft necessary and their current flight is doing well.

DL can fly whatever wherever it pleases, but AA really ought to be flying this route, alongside MCI-MIA. I have no idea why they haven't even tried these markets. LAX makes sense, especially on a S80, and they missed the boat to have the S80 vs. the E75. STL and MCI are legacy TWA strong markets, LAX-STL is still 3-4x S80, I'm positive AA would be successful with a 1x MCI flight, and again surely successful to connect MCI with its very powerful and expanding hub at MIA, which is altogether poorly connected to the Midwest.

AA may have chosen not to fly this route as there is already competition out of MCI from WN, who has two flights a day in this market. DL has introduced more flying to mid-sized cities out of LAX recently, so this makes more sense for them. Also, an LAX-MCI flight would be contrary to the AA "cornerstone strategy" of building up their hubs, so I'm not sure where it would fit in.

Meanwhile, my guess is that this upgauge in equipment may be more about demand for the E75 in LGA to support the increase in flying to smaller markets while a mainline narrowbody may be more appropriate for LAX-MCI due to its stage length.

LAX is an AA cornerstone. Also a goodly number of AAdvantage members via the TWA acquisition, MCI-LAX/MIA would fit in well with AA's network.

I get lots and lots of frequent flyers who go way out of their way to fly AA, in F, with a meal and AA service. Nothing rivals AA's domestic F product except other mainline products, and while the E75 is a nice ride and I applaud DL for the hard product they deliver in it, the FFs I deal with almost exclusively choose AA for the service. Can't get that on Compass.

I'd argue that in Y, I'd consider the E175 a much more comfortable aircraft. But F, no doubt the MD80 wins that battle.

You have a point, it definitely isn't mainline, but DL has improved Compass' product in F and now offer catering which is similar to what AA & DL serve mainline form breakfast and lunch sans the nasty egg dish in the morning.

This would be a good route for AA to start with a A319.
