The Future Of Terminal C In BOS

Tue May 22, 2012 12:34 am

As most of us all know, Terminal C at BOS has changed quite a bit these past few years, and is still changing. Here are the projects that I am aware of:

New Security Checkpoint
On July 28, 2011, the new security checkpoint connecting both piers of Terminal C (United gates C11-C21 and JetBlue gates C25-C36) was completed. The old checkpoint areas are completely empty now, with hallways that connect the piers to the new checkpoint. The "arrivals" escalators that used to be at the end of the old exit lanes are still in their same locations, except the exits themselves are now swinging glass doors that open into the terminal. (Which leave you more or less in front of the escalators, if that makes any sense.)

Airlines In The Terminal
Terminal C was once home to UA, B6, FL, and 9K. FL merged with WN so their operations are now in Terminal E. With UA in Terminal C and former CO in Terminal A, combining their operations are a bit tricky. Their current operation has not changed - Flights to ORD, SFO, LAX, DEN, and IAD (i.e, actual UA flights) operate in and out of Terminal C, while flights to IAH, EWR, and CLE (i.e, former CO flights) operate in and out of Terminal A. I have heard rumors that the long-term plan is to put their combined operations in Terminal B1. Does anyone have any details on this?

Gate Usage
The 3 piers in Terminal C are as follows - UA has gates C14-C21, B6 has gates C25, C26, C28-C36, as well as gates C11 and C12 over on the UA pier. 9K has gate C27. All of these gates are accessible via the new checkpoint. FL used to have gates C40-C42, and these gates have their own security checkpoint. I believe that B6 has taken over these gates, if I am not mistaken. Are there any plans to connect these 3 gates to the rest of the secure side of the airport, say by shuttle bus?

Eventually, B6 will have all of Terminal C to themselves. They want more gates and they want to expand their BOS hub even more. In a year or two (2013?) UA and 9K will be out of the terminal.

Escalators
If you've been in Terminal C lately, you might've noticed that some escalators are out of service. This is because Massport is replacing all old escalators in the terminal. The first one to be replaced was for B6 arrivals, and was completed on April 27. The escalator over by the food court is currently closed and is being replaced now, if I am not mistaken. The long term plan is to replace the remaining 2 - UA arrivals and the one by the barber shop, but this is on hold due to another project:

Secure Connector
I have also heard of plans to build a secure connector hallway between Terminal C and Terminal E. Is this true?

Lastly, a few before/during/after photos of the new security checkpoint:

Before - Former security checkpoint for gates C11-C21. March 2011, landside.

And after - this is what the old checkpoint hallway looks like today. The enclosed glass hallway is what connects the pier to the new checkpoint. March 2012, landside.

Before - The old checkpoint in the UA pier, taken from inside the gate area. The angled hallway on the right takes you out of security and to the arrivals escalator. March 2011, airside.

And after - A brand new feel to this end of the terminal. Looking directly ahead is where the checkpoint used to be. The hallway on the left takes you to the new checkpoint and the B6 pier, and the doors on the right take you to baggage claim, via the same escalator. March 2012, airside.

New B6 counters in the terminal. Remember, this used to be a wall. March 2012, landside.

The new checkpoint! March 2012, airside.

Unfortunately, I do not have any before pictures of the old checkpoint for the B6 pier. The gutted hallway where it once stood. July 2011, landside.

And after - the refinished empty hallway. Those glass doors at the end serve as the exit out of security. March 2012, landside.

Once again, I unfortunately do not have any before pictures of the old B6 checkpoint, but is used to be behind this wall! July 2011, airside.

After - now the area's been cleaned up a bit. Those are the exit doors on the left. March 2012, airside.

Please let me know of any corrections, clarifications, of if the above images need more explanation. I look forward to reading your responses!

Good pics!

I pretty much fly B6 exclusively from BOS (once a month or so) and I really like what they have done. Looking good...

Security moves at a good pace too now...it sometimes looks like its mobbed (early AM rush) but it moves along.

thanks for putting these pictures up. I haven't been through there since the new checkpoint opened. It all looks much smarter now. I hope it's also working more efficiently - the checkpoint on the B6 side was very much a chokepoint.

Yes they are now being used by B6..

Is there some sort of connection project for gates C40-42 to the rest of Terminal C?

I couldn't agree more.

I have experienced this, too. One time when departing BOS on a 6:00 AM flight to SFO, the security lines were long, but moved quickly.

Anytime. As you can see, things have changed quite a bit!

You've got that right. I mean, look at how narrow that old checkpoint hallway was. I did hear that the seating area at gate C25 was at one point gutted to add another lane or two to the checkpoint, but I don't know how much of a difference it made...

Quoting hummingbird (Reply 3):
Yes they are now being used by B6..

Thanks for clarifying.

I do not know if such plans exist.

That'd be quite an undertaking, wouldn't it? There's a brand new food court in the way.

yeah. but I still don't quite understand where you enter the security screening area, after checking in. do you walk in, in channels immediately on either side of the B6 check-in counters?

The strange thing about all this is if UA operates 8 gates (what you say in your post) then they should be able to fit the CLE, EWR, and CLE ops in without having to move to Terminal B. Combined operation of UA/CO is between 40-45 flights a day out of Logan.

I'm assuming that massport wants UA out to make way for a B6 expansion...?

Terminal C is really nice looking at the ticketing and the new security checkpoint, but the part going down to the baggage claim, Dunkin Donuts, the Silver Line pickup, and out to Terminal E is pretty dingy and isn't used for much of anything. I actually forgot that that area was once the connection to Terminal D! Now those gates are part of Terminal E, and are connected, but there is no longer any connection to the rest of Terminal C AFAIK.

and gate C14. B6 currently has 3 gates on the UA pier. If what I've heard is correct, C11 is currently a sublease from UA.

Quoting AlnessW (Thread starter):
9K will be out of the terminal.

I doubt this, and there's been zero talk of 9K moving amongst all the talk of shuffling UA/CO and VX down the line.

Massport recently approved a project to connect ALL gates in the secure area in the long term. I think this is why there was talk of VX moving in the same article announcing Massport's long term plan. The priority right now with respect to C is connecting the former FL gates to the main terminal, and connecting C to E to better facilitate international connections to B6 partner airlines.

Yes, you are correct.

You are correct there as well. If you take a close look at my photo of the new B6 counters, you'll see the entrances on either side (marked with signage). Also, take a look at the interactive map on the Massport website:

Is that the case? As far as I know, UA uses all of C15-C21. (But not C14, so I hear. See below.) Interesting to know.

Quoting tommy767 (Reply 7):

Yes, there is a reason Massport spent $62 million on this new checkpoint.

Quoting BOStonsox (Reply 8):

You make a valid point there, the baggage claim area of Terminal C is indeed a bit old.

Quoting BOStonsox (Reply 8):

The old Terminal D gates are E1A-E1E, right? And yes, those gates are not connected to Terminal C.

Quoting bos2laf (Reply 9):

I was not aware of this. I thought that B6 just used C11 and C12.

I just read the press release! Where is VX going?
