SQ Flights To JNB - Money Maker?

Thu May 24, 2012 10:28 am

Just wondering now that SQ have cut Abu Dhabi and Athens if their JNB service was under the microscope as well?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I noticed that SQ uses their older 777-200 aircraft on this sector with the "old" Krisworld etc (in Y class at least), so I can't see it's a premium sector for them.

Does anyone know what the load factors are like on these flights? Is there much business traffic between SIN and JNB or is it all tourist traffic connecting through from Australia? And is there much of a cargo market between the two centres?

Thanks if anyone can shed some light on the situation.

Heaps of South African expats and tourists in Singapore. I've only known 1 person who has gone to South Africa from Australia via an asian port.

The 772ERs used on the JNB sector are fitted with Spacebeds in J , same seat as what was on the now retired 744 fleet.

Not sure but I doubt that much of it would be Australian traffic, more likely other parts of Asia, probably some NZ traffic would go through Asia aswell.

Do SQ Cargo fly to JNB?

I've done SYD-KUL-JNB twice so you can count me and my partner as numbers 2 and 3 that you now know to have done Aus - asia - South Africa

So, in economy is it the older-style economy with no AVOD ??
Or have these been re-fitted with the newer Krisworld?

SQ and CX are the main Asian carriers out of JNB they are the only ones with daily flights. MH pulled out and im not sure how TG are doing on the route. If one carrier was going to give i personally would think it would be TG.

It's AVOD, but not the new Krisworld. Unless things have changed recently (don't think those planes have had any refitting)

They have AVOD! And i'd have thought the Krisworld system would have been updated in them.

Yes, a lot of NZ-SA traffic goes through Asia as on both SQ AKL-SIN flights i have flown, there have been numerous people connecting onto the SIN-JNB service.

Off topic but I also know of a few Kiwis and Aussies who have flown as far north as the Middle East on EK & QR to connect to South Africa

Well technically they are Asian, although I know that is not what SA744 had in mind when he made his original comment.

You can but speculate unless you work within a relevant department at SQ.

There are passengers ex-Australia even willing to travel all the way to DXB to connect on EK to JNB. So I wouldn't be surprised if there are passengers going to JNB from Australia via Asia

With only Cathay and Singapore going to J'berg from Asia, plus SAA, the market should allow fares to rise with Thai and Malaysia out of the market.

The 77E's (9V-SV* series) used on the route feature the old AVOD system with the 5" screens in Y. They are slated for refurbishment and will receive the new user interface whist maintaining the existing system. The refurbishment will include increasing the Y screens to 9" displays and installing the new regional business class (already on previously refurbished 772's and 333's).

The new KrisWorld system (Panasonic eX 2 on 10" screens) is limited to the 333, 388 and 77W fleets.

Thanks for that info SIA747Megatop - much appreciated! SIA just needs to keep that horrible 388 / 77W business class hard product off the 77E's please?

No problem!   I actually like the long haul business class seat! The airline's made some minor changes to it recently.

As for which seat will be fitted on the 77E's, it's currently only speculation but discussions among enthusiasts here suggest they will be fitted with the regional seats as the 77E's will prove to be uneconomical in such a low density outfit.

The other argument is that these aircraft will continue to operate long haul sectors where the aircraft is more economical and will therefore receive the long haul product. Rumour is the airline will launch a new set of business and first class products on the new 77W's next year.

Either way, I hope to see a new product heading your way sometime soon!

Actually EK can be considered an Asian carrier as the middle east is part of Asia. Sure it is not East Asia or South east Asia but it is part of Asia are India, Pakistan etc.

The SQ 772 looks so small on the tarmac next to the EK 77W and the SAA 346's. A pity I used to like seeing the SQ744 Bigtops so often. I guess this is an example of how things have changed.EK/QR/EY are not only biting into the traffic of QF/BA/AF/LH in various parts of the world I think it is effecting SQ/ MH/ TG and probably CX. For SQ from South Africa it isn't only the SA/Aussie NZ market it is also the SA Far East market that they have lost some of to EK/QR/EY.

I just did a random search for fares MEL-JNB return in August:

SQ: $1848 SIN: 23 hours westbound
EK: $1892 DXB: 26 hours westbound
QF: $2585 PER (SA codeshare): 18 hours westbound
QR: $2814
EY: $2922

SQ and EK have a very large cost saving, for a time penalty, although via SIN not as bad as via DXB, AUH or DOH.

EK, EY & QR make sense if you're flying somewhere like EBB or NBO

When I went to school we were never thought about a Middle East continent. Maybe that's new.
Nevertheless, the topic is traffic between JNB and Asia so EK is very much a competitor in that market, on top of the likes of SQ, MH, TG.

Thank you. And apparently so do QR and EY. Probably one reason why the other carriers are no longer doing as good as they once did. I remember when SQ used to fly their then flagship 744 on this route.

This flight is almost always full and sold at close to full fare most of the time whenever I've looked at it. I think that they make money with the route. I avoid it because of the seat. I have a friend who uses QR frequently, he tells me that their fares are 30% lower in C class, but schedule not as convenient. He's very happy with that.
