Edelweiss To Tampa, FL (TPA) Starts May 25

Fri May 25, 2012 2:44 pm

Edelweiss Air's new ZRH-TPA flight starts today. The first flight, WK 4, is currently en-route. A/C is an A330-300 reg HB-JHQ.

Scheduled arrival time is 5:15PM today, however, it will probably arrive a bit later since it left ZRH about 30 min late.

I really hope this flight works out, it'd be great to have a successful new service for once.

Thanks for the info. I had been looking for this flight, but was unable to find it on several different flight tracking sources. I'm looking forward to meeting the new bird at TPA.

Yes departed ZRH at 13:28 LT. Will have a better idea on the ETA once the A/C is in US airspace. TPA website and Edelweiss's website are both unhelpful with that regard.

True, but both indicate that the flight is "on time".

I hope they get their website and bookling system up and running. Just over a year ago I tried to book Edelweiss's new YVR-ZRH service for a trip to Switzerland. Website was useless, and the only phone number was in Zurich. I ended up booking AC through Toronto. It worked, but I really wanted the non-stop and would have paid a little more for it.

Good luck to them anyway. I'll try again if another opportunity comes up -- but I wasn't impressed.

Flights are codeshared with LX. You can easily book on the LX website.

Tried that route -- no joy. It's probably OK now; this was 18 months ago.

I am really happy to see new international service out of Tampa. To my mind, there still isn't enough "heavy" traffic out of TPA. Understandable though, since most of the business traffic in Florida seems to come into and out of Orlando and Miami.

Nice pics guys and glad to see new International service at my home airport of TPA. I am almost positive this is the first A-330 scheduled service to TPA, perhaps first Airbus widebody for that matter, though would not be surprised if a few have visited before on Charters or for MTC at Pemco.

Congrats Tampa International

Local news reports said Flight 4 inbound to TPA had 280, while the outgoing flight 5 to ZRH had 180. Apparently, Edelweiss was happy with the early sales enough to change it from seasonal service to year-round service.

When there is weather at MCO, TPA sees Airbus widebodies - you guys got the Virgin A330 last March 31 due to storms over MCO. The Lufthansa A330 and A340-600 has also diverted to TPA from MCO

Also I got pics of a Northwest A330 bringing in a college football team back in December 2009. I am sure Northwest or Delta has brought them in for college games as well as a couple NFL teams charter Delta ones as well as I think even Hawaiian Air and brought them to TPA

Was that EDW004? We followed them all across the atlantic before we headed into JFK and they tracked further south, I suspected it might have been the new TPA flight.

Excellent news for TPA. TPA is a good alternative to MCO. Could we see any other European airlines operating to TPA other than ED and BA?

Air France is pulling out of MCO in the fall, maybe they could try TPA with a smaller plane like an A330-200 2-3 days a week - however that might hurt the ED route.

Either MCO or TPA need a Netherlands route, a lot of Dutch pax fly on AF and Martinair served MCO a little over a year ago.

I really don't see much from Southern or Eastern Europe to TPA or MCO

I think the primary focus for the CEO at TPA is to get flights from Central and South America. There's a Cayman Airways flight once daily, but that's about it for foreign carriers. JB flew to CUN and TSJ. Most of the foreign airlines fly to MCO instead of TPA. There are also special charter flights to Cuba 3x weekly.

I agree with this, and have been saying for a while that TPA should go after KL.

Not quite first scheduled Airbus widebody:

Going back on the 90's time machine - CO flew the A-300B4 through the mid-90's as scheduled flights on TPA-EWR, before the "Continentalization" effect of flying smaller planes took place. I had an opportunity to fly it summer '94.

Also looking back in the database, EA had AB3's flying in the late 70's. Not sure where those aircraft went (ATL/MIA/JFK?)

Although I am very happy for TPA to have gained this service, let's also not get carried away here with talk about future capacity to far and away lands. It's just not very profitable for a carrier to be flying long haul to a city of TPA's caliber.

TPA will be marginal at best for Edelweiss. As long as TPA is on the line of marginal with any carrier, routes will be pulled as soon as a w/b aircraft can make a little more money elsewhere...

Let's enjoy this moment in time though. And hope for the best...

BTW: Thx for all the pics and video guys, NICE JOB!
Does anyone have a pic of the BA and Edelweiss parked next to each other?

I'm almost positive NW may have had an A330 at TPA as a Superbowl or Outback Bowl charter 4-8 yrs ago...
Scheduled Service, you are prob right...

You know what would be cool, but probably far fetched? KL/DL doing a 4 days/wk AMS-MCO and 3 days/wk AMS-TPA schedule...Tour Operators could be selling a lot of Open Jaw tickets as well.

Northwest brought A330 in December 2009 for Outback Bowl charter. Not sure if any returned in Delta colors though. Do any NFL teams charter the Delta A330 or the US A330? Doesn't Oakland Raiders use Hawaiian Air? I don't recall if they played the Bucs recently though.
